Immigrant integration is a dynamic, two-way process in which newcomers and the receiving society work together to build secure, vibrant, and cohesive communities. As an intentional effort, integration engages and transforms all community members, reaping shared benefits and creating a new whole that is greater than the sum of its parts (Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees).

Dear partners,

The U.S. government shut down non-essential federal operations on Tuesday, Oct. 1, due to Congress not being able to devise a resolution for the spending bill. With the closure of many programs and locations, you may be asking: How does this affect Coloradans who rely upon food and nutrition programs?

Through October, the following food and nutrition programs are protected:
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - benefits will continue without interruption through Sept. 30, 2014, the end of FY2014 for the State of Colorado, and they do not expect SNAP funding to be impacted by the shutdown in FY2015
  • Child nutrition programs, including: school lunch, school breakfast, after-school meals and snacks, and Summer Food Service Program
  • WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children)
  • Meals on Wheels and older adult nutrition meal sites (but find out which senior programs have been impacted by the shutdown and Farm Bill expiration)
  • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) - while food banks will continue to receive food products already ordered, new food purchases cannot be placed until funds are restored.
But what happens after October? Future cuts to some of vital programs for Colorado families, children and seniors may occur unless the shutdown is reversed. The government shutdown would continue to have negative impacts on Coloradans already trying make ends meet, with agencies and programs forced to make cuts due to strained state and local budgets.

This is already in addition to the SNAP benefit reductions set for Nov. 1, which impacts all households receiving benefits from the safety-net program to purchase groceries and access nutritious food. More than 500,000 Coloradans will lose food assistance next month when the temporary provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) expires.

For those in need of other food and nutrition resources, call the Hunger Free Hotline at (855) 855-4626. The free, multilingual hotline connects Coloradans across the state to resources in their communities. It is confidential and open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We are encouraging everyone to support local organizations impacted. Food banks and food pantries across Colorado will see an increase in demand due to the SNAP benefit cuts on Nov. 1-and if the government shutdown continues-as more families and individuals will access their services for food and nutrition. These organizations need your support to continue serving their communities, so we encourage you to get involved. Individuals can call the Hunger Free Hotline at (855) 855-4626 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to find out about donation and volunteer opportunities in their area.

Contact your Colorado delegates in D.C. and urge them to protect vital programs! Use your voice to help our state avoid additional cuts that will be harmful to families, children, and seniors who already face many struggles. Then share with your co-workers, family, and friends so they can take action too.

We will share updates as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Amanda Garrard

National Food Assistance Benefit Reduction
In November 2013, food assistance benefits will decrease for all households in the United States.
In April 2009, a federal law called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) authorized a temporary increase in the amount of food assistance a household can receive. Per federal law, the temporary increase ends October 31, 2013, which will cause your food assistance benefits to decrease starting in November 2013.
How much is the decrease?
Your benefits depend on many things- income, household size and expenses. So it is hard to say how your benefits will change. The table below gives you an idea what the reduced amount might be for households that have no income. Maximum Monthly Benefit Amount for Households with No Income
