Steve, that is EXACTLY the debate we are having; the issue is getting TO the trails we want to ride, and doing it without support vehicles or a home base to leave gear at. That's why I ruled out the big ADVs; we've been discussing things like the DRZ650, F650GS, or even the new Honda 500. I was thinking anything smaller than a 650 would just be too much of a chore on the highway. I wanted some feedback on whether we'd regret getting into the 650-800 class.
Cheers,
Jim

JB, if you're looking for a bike just for the CBDR and not planning to use it for everyday use afterwards, you might consider a smaller dual sport like a Suzuki DRZ 400 or Yamaha WR250R. They're both road legal and weigh a couple hundred pounds less. Could be important going over Engineer pass and other difficult places. Besides that you can train for off road riding without worrying about screwing up your $10k+ ADV. Just a thought.--On Mon, Dec 7, 2020 at 11:14 Jim Baker <beaker@pobox.com> wrote:Thanks, Jim. Were the BMWs the big 1200s, or the new 800 twins? Good to know someone got an 1150 thru there.--On Mon, Dec 7, 2020 at 9:20 AM Jim Kerick <jim.kerick@gmail.com> wrote:A brother in law did one of their rides a few years back on a KTM 1150. He said the primary bike was the BMW GS.So I think an 800 or the 650 would be right at home on the ride for a rider that had reasonable strength. He did comment that his front fork started to leak. Turned out to be Rick or grit pushing up the seal. So much cheaper fix then replacement.I would keep that in mind as the type of terrain you will encounter.Jim--On Mon, Dec 7, 2020, 06:48 Jim Baker <beaker@pobox.com> wrote:Hey, guys,--A friend of mine and I are thinking about attempting the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route next spring/summer. I'm looking. at a 650 like the F650GS, but my buddy is looking at Tiger 800s. Is a Tiger too heavy for that? For that matter, is the BMW?Hearing from anyone with more experience with these bikes (or that route) would be super helpful.Cheers,Jim
