FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SNOW UPDATE FROM DENVER PUBLIC WORKS

DENVER, CO — Wednesday, December 19, 2012 PM- Denver Public Works plow crews deployed today when snow began accumulating on Denver’s main roadways, or most streets with stripes. After a tough morning commute that found our plows confined in rush hour traffic, great progress on Denver’s streets was made throughout the rest of the day. Crews plowed accumulation throughout the City and applied de-icing materials to help break down remaining snow-pack.

After sun-down, the potential for slush and water to turn to ice increases, and drivers should use caution and be aware of road conditions. De-icing materials help to break up snow and ice pack, but with temperatures dropping into the single-digits, deicers become less effective and ice may still develop.

Crews will remain deployed, performing clean up and addressing icing issues. With snowfall ending, our regular overnight shift will report in to handle any safety concerns that occur overnight and need to be addressed by heavy equipment.

As our plows clean up today, it is a good time to remind Denver residents and business owners that they are responsible for shoveling sidewalks adjacent to their property so that everyone has safe access throughout the City. Homeowners must shovel sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after the snow stops falling; businesses have four hours after the end of snowfall to remove snow.

Help a Neighbor in Need Now!

The City of Denver and Volunteers of America are looking for Snow Buddy volunteers! Residents can sign up to be a “Snow Buddy” and volunteer to help an elderly neighbor shovel their walks. Currently about 60 people have volunteered to help out a neighbor, but there are 150 elderly residents still in need.
