Dear Service Providers,

Here is an excellent resource for refugee youth who have arrived within the last five years who will be graduating in December 2013 or May of 2014..  African Community Center is running a great program to help those students prepare for post-secondary education.

Please see the email below for more information or contact Erin Marin (contact info below) for more questions.

Immigrant integration is a dynamic, two-way process in which newcomers and the receiving society work together to build secure, vibrant, and cohesive communities. As an intentional effort, integration engages and transforms all community members, reaping shared benefits and creating a new whole that is greater than the sum of its parts (Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees).

Hello!

I am very proud to announce that ACC will be hosting summer programming for youth June 10- August 2 this year. We will run On TRAC! (Training for Refugees Accessing College) to help refugee students graduating in December 2013 or May 2014 prepare for post-secondary education. The workshops will:
  • expose students to the college experience (we will visit universities in Denver and Boulder and hear from current students, professors, etc.),
  • enable students to complete college and FAFSA applications on their own,
  • help students write a strong personal statement for  scholarship applications
  • aid students in developing a 5-year education plan
  • connect students to counselors at the Educational Opportunity Center who can help with individualized scholarship search,
  • take students on hiking trips and field trips to museums and events around Denver
  • place students in service sites related to the careers in which they express interest
  • create a community of students facing the same challenges to support one another through the transition to college.
This is an amazing opportunity for refugee students to access help with submitting applications on time to different universities in Colorado and elsewhere! It is open to any refugee student within 5 years of their arrival in the U.S. If you have families and students that you think would be interested, please have students fill out the attached application and return to me by Friday, May 17th at 5 pm.

Thank you very much and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Happy weekend!
