19th Annual Safe City Youth Summit to be held April 12, 2013

This year’s theme: “If Not Me, Then Who Will Follow the Beat to My Song?”

DENVER, COMarch 11, 2013 – The Department of Safety’s Safe City Office will host the 19th Annual Safe City Youth Summit on April 12, 2013 at the Denver Convention Center from 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM.

The Safe City Youth Summit is a free, fun-filled event where youth between the ages of 13 – 18 can attend interactive workshops and participate in roundtable discussions on the latest youth topics identified by the Safe City Youth Leadership Team and its partners. The event is also an opportunity to connect youth with employers and a variety of summer opportunities. Additional features include informational booths, youth-based entertainment, food for attendees, remarks by Mayor Michael B. Hancock and a keynote speech by First Lady Mary Louise Lee.

The Safe City Youth Leadership team will also award two scholarships at this year’s event - a $500.00 scholarship in memory of community activist Walt Beckert and a $250.00 scholarship from College in Colorado. Youth interested in receiving one of the scholarships were asked to submit an essay, poem, artwork or music piece to the Youth Leadership team that explains what this year’s theme, “If Not Me, Then Who Will Follow the Beat to My Song?” means to them, as well as an explanation of how the scholarship will help them obtain higher education.

The Youth Summit has been planned and coordinated by the Safe City Youth Leadership Team, which is comprised entirely of youth, for the past 18 years. The all day Summit is designed to provide youth with a safe forum to discuss key issues they face, and to establish and nurture an ongoing youth partnership with the community.

To register for the Youth Summit contact us at safe.city@denvergov.org or 720-913-4707. For information on booth and sponsorship opportunities, contact Program Coordinator Theresa Kimmet at 720-913-4622.
