Recycle Your Old Electronics at Denver’s Eco-rally Saturday, April 27   DENVER, CO ­— March 18, 2013 - RESERVE YOUR SPOT NOW!  Recycle your old electronic devices, such as televisions and computers, at Denver’s Electronics Recycling “Eco-rally” Collection Event on Saturday, April 27.  This event is by appointment only, so go online to www.DenverGov.org/Ecorally to select your time slot today!  This event is sponsored by the City and County of Denver’s Department of Public Works’ Denver Recycles program, Comcast, the University of Denver’s Center for Sustainability and Metech Recycling.    ·         ELECTRONIC ITEMS ACCEPTED:  Televisions, monitors, CPUs, laptops, printers, scanners, faxes, keyboards, mice, stereos, external hard drives and storage devices, cellular phones, telephones, DVRs, VCRs, digital cameras, video recorders, MP3 players, wires, cables and some small appliances such as microwaves   ·         ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED:  Air conditioners, large appliances, vacuum cleaners, car batteries or household batteries (rechargeable batteries are okay)   The April 27th Eco-rally will be held on the University of Denver’s campus, in the parking lot located just north of the intersection of Buchtel and South Josephine.  Appointment times are divided into 20 minute blocks between 9 AM and 3 PM.  The participation fee for recycling your old electronics is only $5 per vehicle, which includes recycling the first two “screens” (televisions, monitors and/or laptops) and all other electronic peripheral items.  Additional screens will be accepted for recycling at $5 each.  This event is open to the public, but no commercial or business electronic devices will be accepted.   Here’s how to participate: 1.    Go to www.DenverGov.org/Ecorally to sign up. 2.    Enter your information and select your appointment time. 3.    Show up on April 27th at your appointment time with your electronic items and participation fee.   Electronics contain harmful, and sometimes even toxic, substances that can pose risks to our health and the environment when put in the trash.  CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions and monitors contain an average of 4 to 8 pounds of lead each.  Flat panel televisions, laptops and monitors all have mercury-containing lamps inside, and power cords and cables contain significant amounts of lead and cadmium.  Recycling these materials also reduces our need to mine or extract more of the natural resources used to make electronics.   Beginning July, 2013 Colorado Statute SB12-133 will make it illegal for Colorado residents to dispose of electronic materials (e-waste) in landfills.  That means e-waste, such as televisions, monitors, computers, and other electronics, will no longer be accepted in your trash.  The Eco-rally is an opportunity for residents to conveniently recycle their electronics.  There are also a number of local electronic recyclers that can safely recycle your e-waste.  For a complete list visit www.DenverGov.org/RecyclingDirectory.   For more information about this event, please contact Denver Recycles at 311 or www.DenverRecycles@DenverGov.org.   ###
