Tax Dollars and Sense - Lunch 'n Learn

The Tax Dollars and Sense Curriculum was first developed in 2006 as a tool to educate community members and small business owners about basic tax law.  This presentation will cover topics including:

• "Don't be a Victim!" Staying out of trouble with the IRS and avoiding tax scams
  
• Common Taxpayer Issues- Filing Status, Claiming Dependents, When filing is required
  
• "Not Just the EITC"- Earned Income and other ways to maximize your refund
  
• How to take advantage of deductions and benefits
  
• Tax- Favored Savings- IRAs, HSAs, 401Ks
  

Mary Cary Ward, DABC Volunteer and Outreach Manager

Ms. Cary joined the Denver Asset Building Coalition in October 2012. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2010 with a B.A. in Religious Studies. Following graduation, she spent a year with AmeriCorps State and National in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she worked as an Employment Adviser for former offenders, persons with disabilities, youth and senior workers.  Prior to coming to DABC, she worked as a Case Manager for former offenders at a small nonprofit in Richmond, Virginia.  She was drawn to the mission of DABC after working with many clients who used predatory lending and tax preparation services, often due to a lack of sound financial education. In her free time, Mary Cary works as a volunteer for Denver CASA. 

The Denver Asset Building Coalition (DABC) is a nonprofit organization providing free tax preparation, financial education and financial services through accessible sites in Denver to help moderate to low-income families build for the future and become economically stable.
