I hope you're having a warm and full holiday season! Just a couple of days before 2012 is in the books and I'm writing to you with two questions on behalf of your Altitude Multisport Club:

Know of anyone who could do our annual financial audit? For free, preferably?

New Membership Director: Your hard working Board of Directors has been really lucky to have Keira Morrell serving as Membership Director for the past two seasons. She's stepping down for 2013 (though she has already offered to help the new Membership Director with the 2013 Club Swag Order, a large part of the Membership Director's responsibilities).

Here's what our Bylaws say your duties would be:

C. Membership Director
- Responsible for creating and maintaining the "New Member Welcome Packet"
- Acts as the new-member liaison to the club
- Responsible for Club Sponsored apparel and accessories (e.g., race kits,cycling kits, etc.).
- Assist Marketing Director in organizing Club Charity and CommunityOutreach events

Our "New Member Welcome Packet" has turned into an electronic thing - Keira has been emailing new members to welcome them, and one feature of our new website will be automated welcome emails for new members (so your role here will be making sure that our welcome email template says the right things).

You would also need to attend 2/3 of our monthly Board meetings; your term would be two years in duration. We usually meet somewhere that beer is served.

It's a really important role; you'll be making a valuable contribution to the Club. If you are interested in serving as our new Membership Director, please email me at president@altitudemultisport.com.

Annual financial audit: Our Club Bylaws state that "The President will appoint a non-board member to conduct an annual audit of the treasury. The audit will be presented to the Board for approval." Always eager to save your Club's funds so that we have enough to buy new tents when we need to or beer for our Club tent at supported races, I'm hoping that someone knows a non-board member (remember, that could be a Club member - is it you?) who will do it for free. Your hard working Club Treasurer Erin Trail keeps clean books and we have all the bank statements you would need. This is really important - will you please email me (president@altitudemultisport.com) if you or anyone you know would be willing to audit our books? You don't need to be a CPA.

The Colorado Family Leadership Training Institute began in Colorado in 2009. Sometime over the course of the past three to four years you have been connected with this initiative and your support continues to be appreciated. Applications for the Class of 2013 are now being accepted. It is time to spread the news and encourage others to apply for this excellent training opportunity for parents, family members, and other community members interested in making a difference for children, youth, and families.

Who should apply? Parents, teen parents, grandparents, other family members, young adults, foster parents, community members and others who wish to improve the lives of children and families in communities.

The FLTI curriculum is a proven curriculum that inspires trains and empowers individuals to become effective leaders and change agents on behalf of children, youth, and families. This opportunity is only offered to 25 participants who are screened and selected based on their availability and readiness. Consideration is also given to how their participation will enhance diversity, strength, and learning for the group as a whole. FLTI course is offered free of charge! In return, you commit your time and a written community project that reflects your passion.

The 20 week FLTI curriculum is based on the premise that the family is a child’s first and most important teacher. Family members are also the best advocates for children and communities. Community leaders including parents, youth, and family members, can be effective when they speak out on issues and inform policymakers, the media, and the community, about the needs of their members. FLTI offers stimulating educational sessions to boost leadership skills of participants in addressing areas of concern such as accessible child healthcare, the education achievement gap, neighborhood safety, and the significance of parental involvement. Together, class participants will emerge as strong leaders and advocates for all children and their families.

Merry Christmas Wayne...I just read your email to Chuck's family and they were all touched by your kind thought. Thank you for remembering and honoring Chuck this way. He would love it. He has been in our thoughts here often this week.

BTW...you covered all the groups he was a member of although he was also in the AMA.

Everybody please understand that I am not pushing this as money-making, charity event. I didn't know Chuck all that well, but I think you will all agree that his attitude would be something like "Hell, you need an excuse to go for a bike ride?!"

The first annual Chuck Ferrari Memorial Ride - following the same excellent route that Martin led us on last Spring and on the same March weekend. We could put this out to the other bike groups Chuck was associated with and maybe organize it as a charity, though I would suggest we just "pass the hat" and have TK donate the proceeds to whatever organization he and Chuck's family chooses. I figure that a buck or two from everyone who attended, with no set minimum or goal would be fine. Or we could forego the donations and just have a tot to Chuck's memory and his service to our country.

Well, I have to agree with Manny on the Vision. That thing fell off the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

As for the CB, the clean, simple styling is what I like about it. It's no secret that when Honda designed the original CB750 they took most of their design cues from the British bikes of the late 60's. To me a lot of modern bikes just look "over-styled." Like they came out of some Japanese Manga comic, with all these weird and uneccessary angles and corners.

As for boring, to me the most boring thing out there is the generic "cruiser" bike. I get it, it's a classic design but IMO it's been overplayed. I guess that's one reason I'm not enamored of the new Thunderbird. Looks too much like a generic cruiser, except for the engine.

Agreed! I always wondered how much peyote one has to smoke to appreciate the Vision that Victory had in mind. I have to agree with the CB as well. While I overall like the look and the idea, I just don't like it enough to pay that much for it enough to pay that kind of money for one.

Martin; we can all be forgiven for mooning after non-Triumphs. Take S-Steve for instance. We can all commiserate, when under the influence, he can't decide whether to try to start his old Hog, or hit it with a sledge hammer! And since I read a 1966 Hot Rod Magazine test of the 883 XLCH Sportster, I have always liked their looks (maybe S-Steve should hit me with the with that hammer).

I assume you a talking about the Honda CB1100. I agree, with the exception of the GIGANTO 1970's DOT taillight and winkers. Search the web for the Europe and Japan only 1100 Supersport. Talk about a Moriwaki TTF1 look-a-like! E-Steve would be drooling!

It's no secret that HD has been cashing in on the "nostalgia" market for decades. They specialize in selling 40+ professionals the bike they could never afford when they were young. In many ways, Triumph does the same thing with their classic bikes.

Now for those of you who don't know, I have always been a huge fan of the "Universal Japanese Motorcycle." This was the type of bike that was common from the early 70's (late 60's if you want to be picky) through the mid 80's. UJMs typically had 4 cylinder engines and a "standard" (not cruiser, not sportbike) stance.

Well, I started riding in 1982 so the bike I always lusted after was the classic UJM of the early 80s. I've loved them for years and have owned several (heck my user name on the TriumphRAT forums is "UJMRider.")

I kept wondering if any manufacturer was going to try to make a modern version of the bike I dreamed of when I was 20, and it appears that the anwer is "yes."

This new Honda echoes back to the CB750 of 1969, but really what it looks like is the "mature" UJM of the early 80s. DOHC, disc brakes and alloy wheels were common at the end of the UJM era, not at the beginning. What surprised me most is that, like my Scrambler, this Honda is air cooled! (Of course it's EFI, that's pretty much a given these days.)

I love my Triumph, but oh, man, this one's got my brain buzzing, for sure.

Of course, the Japanese have tried to sell big-bore standard bikes in the US before and they've always gotten burned. In the land where HD is the 800 lb gorilla on the market, can the new Honda make a place for itself? Only time will tell. I do hope they sell enough of these that they appear on the used market soon!
