[emrat:5331] Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP Grand Prix

For this year's adventure Denise and I will traveling to the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. We will be taking a leisurely route to Indianapolis traveling through Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky.

During our travels we will be using a SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger which will allow people to follow our movements in real time. Additionally, we will have a SPOT adventures web site which will allow us to share our tracks, photos, stories and updates of our adventure with you.

Below you will find the links to our SPOT and SPOT adventures pages for this summer's adventure.

Rest assured, when Triumph wins an award, I will report it immediately. However, since Indian already won best cruiser and BMW best sport-tourer, Triumph may come up dry this year.

I stewed on the Trophy more times than I'd like to admit although that were more an issue when traffic slowed.

I'm not sure if this comment was tongue in cheek or genuinely expressing
your feelings about any brand other than Triumph being discussed on this
forum? Many of us have ridden, owned and still own bikes beside our Triumphs.
Should we refrain from mentioning any other brand? Assume that Triumph has
created the perfect line of motorcycles and that all others are garbage? Sorry
but my motorcycles didn't come with blinders that keep me from looking at any
other brand or technology that might be out there. If that's an issue than
let me sign myself out.

The main reason I lusted after a BMW RT when I had my Triumph Trophy 900 was the heat. Triumph has had a tradition of ignoring rider thermal comfort of late.

If that's an issue than
let me sign myself out.

Rest assured, when Triumph wins an award, I will report it immediately. However, since Indian already won best cruiser and BMW best sport-tourer, Triumph may come up dry this year.

Interesting to note that BMW's direct competition with the Triumph Tiger 800 XC uses a vertical 2-cylinder, transverse mounted, liquid-cooled motor with chain final drive.  By the way, numerous BMW Airhead owners have referred to their bikes as ankle burners!  Wayne E.

Horizontally is too wide. 90 degrees is better for cornering clearance. Some archaic Italian company comes to mind. :-)

My experience has been that any motorcycle with a water-cooled engine is going to FEEL hotter than a bike with an air-cooled engine.

I don't know if this is because the water cooling allows the engine to run at a higher temperature safely, or if it is because the fan blows through the radiator and then onto the rider's legs, but it's something I noticed on both my 2001 Thunderbird (triple) and also on my wife's Suzuki Intruder 800, which are the only water cooled bikes I've ridden regularly.

If I was to guess I'd say air-cooled engines probably get hotter but with no fan to blow that hot air across your legs, you don't feel it as much.  Although on some of my older 4 cyl Japanese UJM bikes the engine would get very, very hot and I could feel it on my knees, especially in slow traffic.

I think the best way to keep an air cooled engine from getting too hot would be to have each cylinder in a separate case that sticks horizontally out to the side to maximize air flow around the cylinder.

Now, let me think a bit...what company is it that does that??

 Hello all you
 Tiger 800 and 800 XC riders out there.  This morning I took
 a test ride on an 800 and was loving it until about half
 way through the ride when I began to feel like my right leg
 was on fire.  Lots of heat emanating from the triple.
 Have any of you confronted this issue?
  Thanks, Brian
