Re: [emrat:10708] Long ride this weekend?

Martin, what road is the exit on 70?  I can't find anything with exit numbers.

OK, the plan is finalized.  We'll meet at the gas station at I-70 exit 259 (NOT the new Kum - n - Go but the older one, directly North of the Mammoth Lot.)

I'll be there around 8:00.  Look for me on my yellow BMW R1150R.

Kickstands up 8:30 sharp.  It's a long ride so make sure you fuel up.  We'll ride over Loveland Pass, then get back onto I-70 in Silverthorne and ride to Copper Mountain, where we'll take CO 9 to Leadville, then down to Buena Vista.  After Buena Vista I plan on heading back via US 24, Wilkerson Pass, but those who want a quicker return can stay on US 285 towards Fairplay.  Figure ~ 300 miles and probably 6 - 8 hours total riding time.

This will be posted on the FB page as well.

The Dragon is a check the box thing more than a great MC ride but do it on a weekday, the weekends are crazy with car clubs there. Very dangerous as they take the curves too wide and cross the center-line. A much better ride is NC 209 out of Lake Junaluska (a/k/a 'The Rattler"), loop around north and west on US 25 and US 321 thru Gatlingurg and back south through Great Smokey National Park.. Just did that ride in May and it's a great 8:30 to 4:00 ride with an hour for lunch anywhere along the way.  If you are looking for a camping spot off the Blue Ridge in Meadows of Dan, VA check out Wilville Campground.  Great spot, only bikes allowed and they do an evening campfire and have grills, showers and enclosed patio and laundry facilities.  Great spot.  You are headed to one of the great spots in the US for motorcycling.  Have fun!!!

From Woodland Park I like to take 67 to Deckers and then all the way up to Nighthawk Hill (the Twin Cedars or Sprucewood route) and then on to Sedalia.  If there's anyone adventurous enough to join me I may take that route (it requires going on a 3 mile dirt road with a moderately steep uphill - but I've done it on every heavy bike I've owned and never had a problem) or if I don't get any takers, we'll just stay on paved CR 126 through Buffalo Creek to Pine Junction on 285 and then back.

Total distance shows as ~ 290 miles and figure on a full day.  We'd be going over 2 11,000+' passes (Loveland and Fremont.)

Re: [emrat:10706] Long ride this weekend?

I wish Sara and I were able to go, but we have our clubs annual BBQ starting at 4PM on Sunday and have to be there early to set up.  No way we can get both in.

I don't know if you got any suggestions on lunch places in BV, I haven't followed the thread closely, but House Rock Kitchen is very good as is Eddyline at South Maine.  There are two Eddyline's, but one is a tap house with bar food and limited menu, the other at South Main is larger and has a much fuller menu.

Enjoy the ride!

Those who want a more direct return route can elect to stay on US 285 after Buena Vista which should cut about an hour off the return trip (barring traffic.)

Anyone up for a long ride (200+ miles) this Sunday 7/1?  I was thinking maybe riding to Loveland Pass, then on US 6 to Silverthorne, get back on the interstate to Copper Mountain and take Highway 9 to Leadville, then down to Buena Vista, then US 24 over Wilkerson Pass to Woodland Park, and finally back to Denver on CO 67 through Deckers.   Google Maps shows it as being just under 300 miles.

Weather looks good, cooler with a slight chance of rain.  Should be a great day to be in the mountains!

Let me know!

There is a fire near Fairplay, possible closure of 285 ?  Might check in morning.

David:  I highly recommend the Iron Horse Motor Lodge near the Dragon.  They have open camping and numerous indoor options if you are not a tenter.  They have a restaurant for breakfast and supper.

Have fun!!!

Since we'll be heading West I like a West side location for the start.  How about the gas station that's on the NW corner of the intersection of CO 93 and I-70 Exit 259?  I think it's a Conoco but not sure.

As this is going to be a long ride I want to be kickstands up at 0830 (that's 8:30 AM for you civilians. ;)  )

For Lunch I think we'll be in Buena Vista.  Anyone know of a good spot there?
