[emrat:10617] Tire Problem

Actually, TK, our luck improved when we passed under Broadway on Hampden and rode out of the rain.

We also had an object lesson in how to fix a motorcycle tire at the Phillips 66 station at Morrison Road and C-470 while gathering the group.

The plugging of the tire took one hour and fifteen minutes because no one had ever done it before.  The project involved five guys and was only completed when one (an engineer) persisted and finally solved the puzzle, despite the instructions.

I had packed CO2 cartridges and "The Stop and Go Pocket Tire Plugger," but, of course, I had never actually practiced with it.

In hindsight, it should have taken us 15 minutes had we known what we should have been doing.

The next time you have your tires changed, keep an old one and practice.  That's what I'm going to do.  There's no substitute for practicing until you really know how to do it.

The last time I had a flat tire was in . . . 1966 in far southeastern Colorado on my 305 cc Honda Superhawk while riding to meet a friend in New Mexico.  I solved that problem by removing the wheel, hitchhiking to a gas station where it was fixed and hitchhiking back to the bike.  The Honda had tubed tires.  I obviously did not carry a patch kit and a manual air pump.

😊

I saw two of you roll back into the neighborhood right as it started raining here.  Austin and I both thought you had made it BEFORE encountering rain and commented how lucky you were...

On Sunday, I led a small Father's Day ride down to Deckers and back.

In the early afternoon, on Colorado 126, just at the north end of Pine, while riding north we encountered a small flash flood with water running across the highway carrying mud, sand, gravel and debris.  I was literally surprised to encounter it.  But we slowly rode through it.

From there on north almost to US 285, we came across mud and debris from every side road and anywhere else where the water had flowed onto the road.  I've lived in Colorado since 1972, and it was the worst debris that I have ever seen on a mountain highway in Colorado.

We all slowed down and rode carefully across the debris, and no one had any problems.

Then, from Pine Junction back to Denver, we endured a heavy rain storm while riding in heavy traffic.  All riders made it home safely, if not somewhat soaked.  In hindsight, it was an Adventurous Father's Day Ride.

But it also is reminder of how you can encounter hazards on the paved road, for which taking a dirt bike course might be helpful.

Stay safe,
