RATS: With only 2 weeks to go it's probably not too early to start thinking about the ride out to Triumphs in the Rockies in Montrose.
Tentatively I'm planning on taking a long-ish route that will take me through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then on to Copper Mountain, over Fremont Pass through Leadville and then over Independence Pass to Aspen, up to Carbondale for lunch, and then down through Hotchkiss and Crawford riding the awesome CO-92 along the North edge of Black Canyon to Sapinero, and then West to Montrose.
Google Maps says 327 miles and a hair under 7 hours.
Obviously, with the fire in Basalt they may close CO 82 West of Aspen and if they do I'll have to come up with a different plan. I may decide to stay on I-70 and go over Grand Mesa instead.
For those planning to take 285, just keep in mind that because of the fire in South Park they are diverting traffic just past Fairplay onto CO 9 to Hartsel and then West on US 24 to Johnson Village. It's not a big detour (I don't think it adds more than 5 miles) but traffic can be heavy so be ready for it.
Departure time will depend on the route but my goal is to arrive in Montrose no later than 5:00pm which will likely mean an earlier kickstands-up time (8:00 or thereabouts.)
I plan on going a more southerly route for the return on Sunday, 7/22. I'm going to try to avoid all the traffic that seems to clog up both 285 and US 24 between Hartsel and Woodland Park.
