Re: [emrat:10760] Re: Ride to Montrose 7/20...

Tavis, for those of us not on Rever, can you elaborate just a bit on the route?  Seems like you're taking 126 down to Woodland Park, then US 24 to Buena Vista, then going over Independence Pass to Aspen, on to Carbondale, over McClure Pass and then the "back way' into Montrose over Highway 92 through Sapinero?

By my reckoning (based on a google maps projection) that comes out to just under 400 miles and some great passes.  If that's the route you're taking I'm definitely in.

I'll be on the Bonneville so my distance between fuel stops will probably be in the ~140 - 150 mile range.  To be on the safe side, that means at a minimum I'll need to fuel up in Woodland Park, Buena Vista, Carbondale, and Hotchkiss.  I'm assuming anybody on a Bonnie-type bike will want to do the same?

As for lunch, the burger place in Buena Vista is cheap and reasonably quick, though eating is outside.  in Carbondale there's a nice diner called the Red Rock right at the junction of CO 82 and 133 where we'll turn Left to go towards McClure pass.

My personal preference is not to linger over meals on a long ride and this one looks like 8+ hours according to Google.  I like to save my heavy meal for after the ride is done.

Anyway, I'm definitely up for some long rides on twisty roads!

I couldn't get my ride to add to the event on Rever, but here is a link to my ride if anyone wants to join me.

I plan on leaving from the usual gas station in Morrison around 08:30, heading out through Deckers, a quick gas stop for the Thruxton sized tanks if needed and on to Buena Vista.

I will probably stop for lunch in either Buena Vista or Carbondale depending on the crew we end up with, and what time we can get to either place. There are still fires going on in Basalt, so Buena Vista may be a better idea, but we can work that out on the road.

I plan on riding down my favorite ride in the state of highway 92 from Crawford to Blue Mesa, but anyone can feel free to skip on past this part if they want to just push through.

This will put us into Montrose sometime around 18:30 or 19:00, which should leave plenty of time to fill my side case with beer and jump in the pool before it gets dark.

Let me know if you plan on meeting me so I know roughly how many people to expect. I will try and hav my Rever app on, so please find me on there and join the ride!

I will be leaving from Colorado Springs around 3PM on Friday; I know that's pretty late but if anyone wants to convoy I'd welcome the company.  Route TBD and depending on what's currently not on fire.

RATS: With only 2 weeks to go it's probably not too early to start thinking about the ride out to Triumphs in the Rockies in Montrose.

Tentatively I'm planning on taking a long-ish route that will take me through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then on to Copper Mountain, over Fremont Pass through Leadville and then over Independence Pass to Aspen, up to Carbondale for lunch, and then down through Hotchkiss and Crawford riding the awesome CO-92 along the North edge of Black Canyon to Sapinero, and then West to Montrose.

Google Maps says 327 miles and a hair under 7 hours.

Obviously, with the fire in Basalt they may close CO 82 West of Aspen and if they do I'll have to come up with a different plan.  I may decide to stay on I-70 and go over Grand Mesa instead.

For those planning to take 285, just keep in mind that because of the fire in South Park they are diverting traffic just past Fairplay onto CO 9 to Hartsel and then West on US 24 to Johnson Village.  It's not a big detour (I don't think it adds more than 5 miles) but traffic can be heavy so be ready for it.

Departure time will depend on the route but my goal is to arrive in  Montrose no later than 5:00pm which will likely mean an earlier kickstands-up time (8:00 or thereabouts.)

I plan on going a more southerly route for the return on Sunday, 7/22.  I'm going to try to avoid all the traffic that seems to clog up both 285 and US 24 between Hartsel and Woodland Park.
