OK, truth will out . . .

 

In 1977, I applied to the CIA.  I received a phone call directing me to a room at the Holiday Inn in Golden where I met a guy, and I talked about my life.

 

Next, I received a second phone call directing me to buy a plane ticket and fly to Houston and go to the Whitehall Hotel.

 

At the hotel, I went to a room and met two men, one young and hip and the other older, the kind of grey-suited man you often see on the streets of Washington DC.

 

Again, they just asked me questions about my life, and we met for about an hour.

 

I flew home and a few weeks later I received a letter from the CIA informing me that I would proceed no further in the application process.  But I was reimbursed for the plane ticket.

 

I was disappointed.  I was looking forward to the lie detector test.

 

I still have that rejection letter, buried somewhere in a box.

 

I need to frame it to remind me that, had I joined the CIA, I never would have met all of you fine motorcycling folks.

J. Edgar Hoover wrote me back that you had to be a lawyer or an accountant at that time to become a G-Man.
