Bob, remind me to tell you the story of what happened in July 2007, when I was riding that ’01 Speed Triple to CA. On the Utah-Nevada border, west of Cedar City UT, the clutch cable broke with about 19,000 miles on the bike . . . .

Well, I’ll pass on the question of following TK anywhere. Although someone should have followed him when he decided to ride solo over Webster Pass down in the Sangre de Christos, right?
I did have the speedometer on my 2001 Speed Triple break at about 24,000 miles, but the odometer has worked well these many years.
Norm, most of my decisions I make are, in my humble opinion, perfectly normal and rational . . . like riding a new (used) bike up I-25 when I have no idea whether or not it will fall apart under me. I can understand that sane people might think such decisions are . . . crazy!

Norm..."lapse of judgement and followed TK"?!! C'mon Man! I have seen Harley's going over that pass. You telling me a Triumph can't handle it?!

Some may recall my trip to Gunnison when I had a momentary lapse in judgment and followed TK over the dirt road pass to Crested Butte on my 2003 Speedmaster. It vibrated so bad it broke a wire that feed the power to one spark plug causing me to run on only one cylinder. The other event that weekend is my speedometer quit too.
I asked the Erico tech who repaired the bike if I caused the speedo problem by running on a dusty road. He said no, in 2003 Triumph apparently got some speedo cables that were not properly greased and that caused friction which broke the speedo drive line. That may be the same cause for Dan's new toy. Does not answer when and how many miles but might negate a nefarious intent.
Going north on I-25 on a new bike is more adventure than I need. Your a braver man than me Kunga Dan!

Good point, Sean, about the odometer.
Looking back, there was a confluence of factors (think “The Perfect Storm”) that led me to buy the bike without properly assessing it first, as I described last week.
I hope none of you buy a bike the way I bought this one!
That said, the bike really doesn’t look like it has any more than 4,000 miles on it. It also has the Micron canister and relatively new Pirelli tires. The Erico guys agreed that it’s a very clean bike. The fact that it ran so well today also boosts my spirits. But I’m still holding my breath . . .
I’m thinking that, had “Bill,” the seller, disconnected the odometer to put on unrecorded miles, he would have then reconnected it prior to selling it. If he wanted to do that, he would have taken his time and tried to sell it for $4,000 to $5,000 and not for $3,500. Erico’s should be able to tell me if the odometer had been messed with or has just malfunctioned.
He started the bike when I went over late that Tuesday night after the EMRAT meeting. And the odometer said 4,016. I put the mileage down on his title when I turned it over to the DMV to get the plates as he had left it blank, and I didn’t think anything about it at the time.
It was clear that he regarded the bike as a “track bike” as it had an MRA sticker on it, and he said he had taken an MRA course/class and had ridden it at High Plains Raceway. He also said that he had the bike “dyno-tuned” and the suspension set for racing at a private shop somewhere in the north metro area. Erico’s can determine if all of this is true and if he also put a Power Commander in it.
Given that the bike had a pretty dirty, rusty chain (Yuk! I just had to clean and lubricate it before I rode it away!!!) and that the bike was covered with dust, even though it was under a bike cover, I don’t think it had been ridden in recent months.
As I mentioned last week, he said that he was going through a divorce and filing for bankruptcy and needed cash ASAP. His very messy apartment seemed to support his story. (Some women in our group might say that a messy apartment/home is not an indication that a man is filing for bankruptcy and going through a divorce. They might say that it’s just an indication that a man lives there.)
Anyway, I have no way of easily verifying anything that he told me, although Erico’s can now play detective for me and verify the condition of the bike.
Given that the odometer, speedometer and low-fuel light are all malfunctioning, I’m assuming that he had neither the time nor the money to get these things fixed as his life unraveled--if that’s truly what happened.
He had not heard of Erico’s and he barely knew of Foothills!
Finally, to Martin’s point: I have only sold three of my bikes over my lifetime:
· 1964 Honda Super 90 (not the perfect long-distance touring bike)
· 1965 Honda 305cc Super Hawk (I never thought I would need a bigger, more powerful bike than this one)
· 1971 Joel Wey Triumph Café Racer (which is really a show bike, not one to ride)
Stay tuned for the next chapter in this story . . .
Dan

To a point I am sure. But it is technically illegal to operate a vehicle with the odometer disconnected or not functioning and considered "Odometer Fraud” if I am not mistaken. So that should have been taken care of and the odometer certified prior to sale should it not? I am sure the operative language would fall into the “it was working just fine the last time I checked it” category hahaha.
It was a curiosity question, because I had always been told to be very wary and avoid vehicles that were less than ten years old, with an odometer that was not functioning. The reason being that odometers in modern vehicles were pretty much fault free, and that a non-functioning odometer was often a sign that a vehicle had possibly been in an accident or that the odometer had been deliberately tampered with.
I am not sure how accurate that is, but it has always scared me off of a deal, and why I asked :)
