Re: [emrat:3887] Hey, check out the new girl...

Flat-bed or flat-head?

Wayne & Brandon:  There are stretches of Route 66 that are still accessible, however you have to realize that many of them are the poorly maintained "frontage roads" that run alongside Interstate 40.  In Arizona, at least, some of them are marked by the state with "Historic Route 66" signs.

There are, however, a couple of stops worth making.  From the AZ/NM border heading west, I would recommend the following:

Petrified Forest/Painted Desert National Monuments are stunning and beautiful.  They're located on opposite sides of the highway but definitely worth a look.

Next, there's "Standing On The Corner Park" which is located - where else? - in Winslow, Arizona.  I'm fairly certain it's the only city park that takes its name from a Jackson Browne/Eagles song.  It's located in downtown Winslow right across the street from a "Route 66" tourist-trap store and the streets in Winslow are all marked with the big Route 66 logos painted on the pavement.  It's a nice place to stop when the sound of your own wheels is driving you crazy.  Park your bike next to the blue, flat-bed Ford truck that is permanently parked there and take a picture.

Meteor Crater is not technically a "roadside attraction" since it has been there about 7,000 years longer than Route 66 but it's still an impressive site and worth a visit.

About 75 miles West of Flagstaff, old Route 66 splits off from the interstate at Seligman and heads North towards Peach Springs and Grand Canyon Caverns.  This is another well marked "Historic Route 66" section and much more fun than staying on I-40.  It's about 90 miles long and is one of the longest stretches of "Old Route 66" that is still separate and distinct from the interstate.

Finally, there is an old OLD section of Route 66 (that was actually re-routed before WWII, so it's not part of the 1950s/60's Route 66) that runs between Kingman, AZ and Needles CA, that would make a fantastic motorcycle road.  It goes up over the mountains and has a lot of narrow, twisty corners (that's actually the reason it was bypassed in the late 30's, it was too curvy and too high for the trucks and cars of the day to safely negotiate.)  It passes through the funky little town of Oatman.  Oatman is, in many ways, a typical tourist town with one exception:  Wild burros that are descendants of the burros that were brought there to work the mines in the 19th century still roam the streets.  In fact, most of the shops in town sell little packets of carrots you can feed them and so many tourists do feed them that as you walk down the street the burros will actually walk up to you expecting to be fed.  It's a fun little town.

Not sure about California, as I've never driven Route 66 there, but I've done most of the AZ strip a few times and those are the highlights that stick out in my mind.

Brandon; the column is in his first book, "Leanings".  I have attempted to bring it up online, however all I get is reviews and ads to buy the book.  If I remember correctly, Egan did actually ride on closed portions of US 66 in Illinois.  I believe this was the gist of the column.  There are quite a few portions of the highway that are accessible further West in the US, however whether or not they are actually legally accessible is a question for the US DOT and State Patrols.  Any help out there from other EMRATS?   Wayne E.

Brandon; in one of Peter Egan's "Leanings" books, he recounts a trip he and his wife took in the late '70s on the newly introduced Suzuki GS1000, to attempt to trace the remaining parts of US 66 (1926-85).  Suggest you look it up, if you haven't already done so.  Wayne E.

That right now is my main biking goal on my bucket list. I want to ride to Chicago and take route 66 all the way to California and ride back to Colorado.... Or fly out to Chicago rent a bike then ride it to Cali... But I'd like to make those memories on my own bike.

And its a parallel twin not a v-twin. Honestly 80% of the cruisers look alike. But those white walls..... Damn! And part of the reason I would pick this over the rocket is because it has a 6 speed... I could probably get a little farther on it than the rocket. And as far as I know its at least a couple thousand cheaper.

Brandon, you should remember the Bell Curve of human opinion.  It could well be that Norm and Curtis are what we call “statistical outliers.”

If you like the new Triumph, you should buy it (assuming your wife is agreeable).

And then just donate the Warfman Sprint RS to my “Triumph Rescue Program”.
