Re: [emrat:7091] Riding Idaho--Sad Memory

Deal!  Yes it's your koozie.

:-)

You must be spending the night in Salmon?

Hi Dan,

I didn't see your message before I left Challis. The good news is that it's about 15 north of my present location. I'll be going that way tomorrow so I can get the picture then. It's the least I can do.

I'm not sure what little item I might have left behind, but if it's the beer koozie I'll trade you for a brand new and unused one that you can decorate any way you choose. Deal?

Great shot, Steve.  Looks like the river is running full there.

I had a specific reason two years ago riding the Challis-Salmon route because I was looking for a motorcycle crash site.

One of Madie's best friends, Caroline, had a former husband by the name of Donald Masters, who rode a Honda Gold Wing.  He served in Vietnam as a Green Beret and was later an attorney in Denver.

Over Labor Day weekend 2009, he disappeared on the Gold Wing somewhere in the MT-ID area.  In addition to law enforcement searching, many motorcyclists joined in.  See this thread on Adv-Rider.

He was caught on a traffic cam in one of the towns south of Missoula.  And he had bought gas with a credit card in MT.  But that was it.  For three weeks, no sign of him was found.

Then, hunters scouting for elk walking along the highway discovered the bike and his body off in a ditch, obscured by bushes and trees.  I think it was on a curve.

I could not find an accident report with the Idaho State Patrol as to the exact location.  The location given in a news story turned out not to be correct.  But I think it was south of North Fork, which is north of Salmon.  The road is pretty curvy south of North Fork.

The AdvRider thread has the approximate location, but I did not have this information at the time.

On August 31, 2010 some of the folks who helped look for Donald (both in person and in spirit) will be gathering at mm 322.1 on ID Hwy 93 (approximate lat/long is N45 21.641 W113 57.699) to watch the sunset and remember someone many of them never knew but who changed their lives in profound ways.

Madie met Donald at Holme Roberts Owen, and then he hired her to work for him at United Cable, which launched her into her career in cable TV.  He also met Caroline at HRO and they eventually married.  His funeral took place in Denver in late September 2009.

Although I never met him, Donald certainly played a major role in Madie's life for many years.

So, Steve, if you get this message before you ride north from Challis, see if you can find what looks like a spot where a motorcycle might have crashed at mile marker 322.1 and take a photo for me.  My thought was that he probably went into a curve too fast, ran wide and then went off the road and down.

Safe riding, Amigo!

Dan

Dan,

Funny that you should mention that route. I'm writing this in Chalis now. I'm going as far north as Salmon, and then southeast toward Strasburg. Yes, Annette has given me permission to land.

Last year Tim and I rode US 12 from Missoula to Lewiston. It's a great road. Thanks for the suggestions. I just came from Stanley, where I took the picture. It looks like it could be Limon doesn't it? Perhaps I'm playing up Idaho too much.

One other tidbit: I'm having no problems finding ethanol free premium fuel. I can't find it anywhere around Colorado. Just saying.

Steve, when is Annette going to tell you that it is safe for you to come home?  By the way, I have a small item, which you prize highly, that you left behind at our home on Vashon Island.  I can return it to you at the July 7th meeting.

Two Idaho roads that I highly recommend from when I rode the Sprint RS up to Seattle/Vashon Island two years ago:

·         US 93 from Challis to Lolo, just sought of Missoula; and

·         US 12, from Lolo to Kooksia (and then on to Lewiston).

I'm sure some of you—perhaps Jay, Tim, Norm, Bonneville Bob, Sean and Sara?--have ridden these highways as well.

But I remember seeing a sign on US 12 that said, "Curves, Next 99 Miles."  Whoopee!

If you get the chance to ride to Idaho you should definitely do it! Not only is the scenery stunning with winding roads, the state has some very cool aspects that you might not be aware of.

Beer in the grocery stores isn't unique to Idaho but growler refilling and tasting samples? Hell yeah! How about build-your-own six-packs with over 100 different choices from small to medium sized breweries from across the country! Sweet!

As I was having lunch in McCall yesterday some other exotic European motorcycle pulled in and parked next to me. Despite the supposed "lack" of Moto Guzzi dealerships they still outnumber those German bikes two to one. Now that's class!

Having a great time! See you all later!
