Tavis,

Lori & I would join you over Cottonwood if you're still thinking about it. Let me know.

Charlie and I went over Monarch a few weeks back at pretty high speed, so I am sure we will be hard pressed to match that miracle of traffic again. However if the weather is not in a good mood, it may be the way to go.

My brand new tiger is looking for some mud to put on it though, so perhaps I will slog through the mud either way. If no one is joining me I will probably not do it on my own, and I understand if all the sport bike and Bonneville crowd doesn't want to do a few miles of washboard gravel.

Either way I am looking forward to a good ride.

If the weather does NOT cooperate, and you are heading down toward Almont, you will be hating life. The year I rode Dan's GS, I was heading up in a steady rain and seldom exceeded 10 mph. Anyway, given the splendid curves afforded by Monarch, I certainly won't bother with Cottonwood.

Just a note about Cottonwood Pass (and to poke Curtis Graves in the ribs also) to follow on to "Warfman's Wisdom."

Curtis told me that one year he rode his BMW R 1200 GS (which I bought from him last fall) over the pass when the road was muddy.

Long story short, the bottom of the engine on the GS still sports baked-on clay.

BMW of Denver suggests using Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove it, which I have not done yet.  Perhaps it's better to leave it on to protect the metal . . . .

Anyway, I think of the west side of Cottonwood Pass each time I look at the bottom of the GS engine . . .

I did the route that Tavis is describing a few years back. Might have been when we stayed in Gunnison. Nice ride, entertaining, and not difficult as long as the weather cooperates (otherwise the short dirt portion can be a bit "snotty").

this would get my recommendation as a good option if you want something a little different.

All,

I was planning on leading a ride as well, however I may just join Jay and his ride, but reserve the option to split off at Buena Vista with anyone who wants to go over Monarch pass and stop in Gunnison for some lunch or coffee.

I would also consider splitting off and going over Cottonwood pass for anyone willing to brave some dirt with me and my new Tiger. If there is interest I can get more details on the route.

Otherwise see you all on Friday morning ready to ride!
