Re: [emrat:8782] Group Rides to Montrose

Tavis, I will be happy to ride the Phantom Canyon and the loop back sometime this summer/fall. Great day of riding right there.  Let's make a plan !

I love the Phantom Canyon, I used to go camping there with my family as a kid. I will save that for some other time, perhaps after Charlie buys a tiger ;P

It is a shame they are going to pave it, but in all honesty, it is pretty much brown tarmac now.   It is a nice scenic ride though and I enjoy the paved stretch from Collegiate Peaks Campground on up to the unpaved bit too  :)

If you really want to add a bit more dirt Tavis, you could 67 out of Sedalia and ride that to Victor, take Phantom Canyon out of Victor to Hwy 50.   Then you could take Hwy. 50 over Monarch or take 285 to Buena Vista and then go over Cottonwood Pass.

But either way,  Cottonwood Pass is a nice relaxed scenic route and worth doing before they pave it :)

I drove over Cottonwood in early June in my Mini Cooper.  The road is 16 miles of graded gravel (CO-306) with a fair amount of washboard on the west side until you reach pavement at Taylor Park Reservoir.  I rode the pass on a Goldwing in the mid '90s, so any bike can make it.  However, expect a lot of dust on a dry day.  It's paved to the top on the east side with lots of curves and several switchbacks.

BTW, the pass will be closed next year in preparation for paving.  I believe it may not reopen until 2018.  So this is the last year to experience the gravel bits.  The road from Taylor Reservoir (CO-742) is a very relaxed ride with gentle curves until you reach the Almont junction on CO-135. From there it's another 10 miles, mostly straight and busy to Gunnison and Hwy 50.

TK: Cottonwood Pass is no way comparable to Hayden pass. Cottonwood is made for everyday automobile traffic. And even BMW GS's can do it. Usually. Without off-road expertise.
Why, what could go wrong on Hayden pass? Or is that "don't ask, don't tell" territory? Got J-B Weld in your tank bag? ;-)

TK, I think it's time for you to retell your story for (a) those who are new to the club since that epic adventure and (b) for those of us who never tire of hearing your story.

With deep respect,
Dan

Tavis...don't let the fact that you might have to ride the pass alone hold you back.  What could possibly go wrong?  Oh wait...never mind!  (For those of you around long enough to remember the Haydn Pass debacle)

Charlie and I went over Monarch a few weeks back at pretty high speed, so I am sure we will be hard pressed to match that miracle of traffic again. However if the weather is not in a good mood, it may be the way to go.

My brand new tiger is looking for some mud to put on it though, so perhaps I will slog through the mud either way. If no one is joining me I will probably not do it on my own, and I understand if all the sport bike and Bonneville crowd doesn't want to do a few miles of washboard gravel.

Either way I am looking forward to a good ride.

If the weather does NOT cooperate, and you are heading down toward Almont, you will be hating life. The year I rode Dan's GS, I was heading up in a steady rain and seldom exceeded 10 mph. Anyway, given the splendid curves afforded by Monarch, I certainly won't bother with Cottonwood.

Just a note about Cottonwood Pass (and to poke Curtis Graves in the ribs also) to follow on to "Warfman's Wisdom."

Curtis told me that one year he rode his BMW R 1200 GS (which I bought from him last fall) over the pass when the road was muddy.

Long story short, the bottom of the engine on the GS still sports baked-on clay.

BMW of Denver suggests using Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove it, which I have not done yet.  Perhaps it's better to leave it on to protect the metal . . . .

Anyway, I think of the west side of Cottonwood Pass each time I look at the bottom of the GS engine . . .

I did the route that Tavis is describing a few years back. Might have been when we stayed in Gunnison. Nice ride, entertaining, and not difficult as long as the weather cooperates (otherwise the short dirt portion can be a bit "snotty").
this would get my recommendation as a good option if you want something a little different.

All,
I was planning on leading a ride as well, however I may just join Jay and his ride, but reserve the option to split off at Buena Vista with anyone who wants to go over Monarch pass and stop in Gunnison for some lunch or coffee.

I would also consider splitting off and going over Cottonwood pass for anyone willing to brave some dirt with me and my new Tiger. If there is interest I can get more details on the route.

Otherwise see you all on Friday morning ready to ride!
