I personally interpreted TK's subsequent purchase of the "bumblebee" BMW R 1150 GS to be indicative of his desire to ride a slower, and therefore safer, bike than a lightning-fast Triumph 1050 Tiger.

But I could be wrong . . .

Aye fine Sir. An apt description of the unfortunate series of events!

If I remember right, in 2009 TK went 'round the bloody bend (and down the slope); Chuck was worried, as it cut into his beer drinking time waiting for TK to show up.  A perfectly good 1050 Tiger was dispatched, post haste. and the lad went over to the dreaded Hun from that point on.  EWB

Those of us who attended the EMRAT Rally in Gunnison (what year was that?) well remember how intimately TK bonded with this road, right?

Especially "Nurse Erin" Green, "Iron Butt Steve" and Annette Smith, and Tim Green . . . . .

Thus, given his singular experience, it is only fitting that TK be allowed to name the road for the EMRAT.

Or, so I humbly propose . . . .

Almost ANY road in Colorado is equal or better to the TOTD; how 'bout 'CO kick-ass hold on and gas it!' ? (Aye, TK, and he's a darlin' boy).

Some of us took that road during last year's event and we had as much fun as you can have on a motorcycle!

Good idea, Martin.  I would suggest, however, that we let TK come up with the name since he has very intimate knowledge of the road.

Since you'll be passing through Gunnison I'm assuming some of you will be riding CO 92 between Hotchkiss and Sapinero?  I rode it on Saturday (the other direction, from Hotchiss to Gunnison) and it is fantastic, as always.  Lots of MC traffic, though, as it's a popular ride.

As I was riding along I was thinking that CO-92 could be Colorado's own "Tail of the Dragon."  I don't know how many curves it has but it's got to be in the hundreds and the scenery is second to none.  If I had to rate the top 5 motorcycle roads in CO that stretch of 92 would be at or near the top.

If the weather does NOT cooperate, and you are heading down toward Almont, you will be hating life. The year I rode Dan's GS, I was heading up in a steady rain and seldom exceeded 10 mph. Anyway, given the splendid curves afforded by Monarch, I certainly won't bother with Cottonwood.

Just a note about Cottonwood Pass (and to poke Curtis Graves in the ribs also) to follow on to "Warfman's Wisdom."

Curtis told me that one year he rode his BMW R 1200 GS (which I bought from him last fall) over the pass when the road was muddy.

Long story short, the bottom of the engine on the GS still sports baked-on clay.

BMW of Denver suggests using Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove it, which I have not done yet.  Perhaps it's better to leave it on to protect the metal . . . .

Anyway, I think of the west side of Cottonwood Pass each time I look at the bottom of the GS engine . . .

I did the route that Tavis is describing a few years back. Might have been when we stayed in Gunnison. Nice ride, entertaining, and not difficult as long as the weather cooperates (otherwise the short dirt portion can be a bit "snotty").

this would get my recommendation as a good option if you want something a little different.

All,

I was planning on leading a ride as well, however I may just join Jay and his ride, but reserve the option to split off at Buena Vista with anyone who wants to go over Monarch pass and stop in Gunnison for some lunch or coffee.

I would also consider splitting off and going over Cottonwood pass for anyone willing to brave some dirt with me and my new Tiger. If there is interest I can get more details on the route.

Otherwise see you all on Friday morning ready to ride!
