Re: [emrat:9875] Trip Routing Help CO/WY/ID/MT/CO

Bob,

Good for you taking some time to get out and ride before hitting the job market. Nothing clears up a persons mind like wandering around the Rocky Mountain West. I must say that your travel plans look pretty ambitious considering that you're camping out on the way. I think that you'll be needing a good rest when you come back from vacation!

If you want to get to MT after Boise, I highly recommend taking ID 21 from Boise to Stanley, and then ID 75 to Salmon. That is some of the most beautiful scenery in the state and it would be a shame to miss it. From Salmon it's a short ride into MT, and the SW corner is very nice indeed. As Travisto said, the Beartooth pass is one of the best motorcycling roads in the country, not to mention spectacular. Mornings are the best times to ride it as it tends to be rainy in the afternoons.

Good luck with your trip and have a great time!

Hmmm.. I guess so.  I thought they would have the Android version out by now,  It has been "coming soon" for awhile.

Scenic is another cool app.  You can target your start, end and any points you wish in between and choose routing options such as curvy and avoid highways and Scenic will plot a nice route.

You can also use it to record your rides/routes.

Here is my faorite app to plan out trips like this, it has a great filter to find good roads as well as interesting things to stop and see.

Otherwise get yourself the Butler maps for the states you are intersted in, IMHO they are well worth the slightly extra $$ for the great rides outlined on them. Paper on the tank is always a huge plus as well since it doesn't stop working.

Other than that here are just a few places you may want to stop by and check out:

CO:

WY:
Thermopolis, WY: Free Hot springs, as a great place to stop and soak out a long day ride, or just a quick shower from camping.

Beartooth Highway Always a must on a motorcycle.

MT:
The wife said to make sure to mention some really nice dirt canyons she did on her scooter last year near Georgetown Lake, Anaconda, MT

UT:
Mt. Nebo: Small out of the way spot with a great ride

Escalante / Boulder area is always an amazing ride on road or more dirt if you want. And of course Bonneville Bob would be sad if I didn't mention the Burr Trail Grill for a burger and some Pie.

On the way back into CO highway 90 to Naturita is also a great ride.

Hopefully this gives you at least a few options to get your trip started, and perhaps some to put a pin on for later. I am sure everyone else has some favorite spots along your route as well.

An unexpected opportunity has presented itself to me in the form of time off and idle hands (read: a corporate downsizing).  I have decided to take my first moto-camp trip.  I've given myself the present of being away from the wife and kids for a week before hopping back into the job market,  Since its the first time I've motor-camped I'm going to ease into it.  I'm bringing basic camping gear but plan to eat a couple of meals a day in restaurants so I don't have to worry about food, cooking, etc.  Mid trip I have a nights stay at a friends house so I know I'll take one good shower and wash some clothes.  Here is my tentative itinerary, as you can see it has some holes.

The big questions are how to get to Jackson WY in two days and how I should route myself back to Golden after Boise.  I'd love to get in 3-400 miles a day and stop and see the sights every now and then. Will avoid superslab like the plague.

7/24-7/31 or so, very flexible:

Day 1 Golden to somewhere between Golden and Jackson??, camp somewhere cheap??
Day 2 Somewhere to Jackson stay in backyard of a guy off ADVRider.com
Day 3 Explore Yellowstone back to Jackson backyard camp
Day 4 Jackson to Boise, stay at friends house
Day 5 Montana??
Day 6 More Montana into Wyoming??
Day 7 Back to Golden

Any ideas and advice are welcome.
