[The Network] Only two weeks left to register for "Understanding and Assisting Clients with Disabilities" February 28

Just a quick reminder about The Network's upcoming disabilities training:
Understanding and Assisting Clients with Disabilities
Location: Rocky Mountain Human Services, 9900 E Iliff Ave., Denver, CO 80231
Date: February 28, 9am to 4pm

Disability awareness training is the key to establishing an organizational culture that sees disability clearly, can relax around the topic, and perceive such clients as assets rather than liabilities. Disabilities vary. Being hard of hearing is different from being deaf. Having low vision is different from being legally blind. A disability can happen to anyone at anytime. Some people are born with a disability. For others, the disability results from an illness or an accident. Sometimes it happens because the person is getting older.

Attend this workshop to learn more about this vital topic from the acknowledged experts in the field: Rocky Mountain Human Services (formerly Denver Options). Participants will learn:
  • How to serve clients with disabilities;
  • Common traits experienced by different disability groups and how those traits impact the provision of services;
  • To recognize and respond to disability-based support needs;
  • The importance of focusing on the abilities and support needs rather than labels;Strategies to implement inclusive programs.
  • The history of disability in the U.S. and the evolution of laws preventing discrimination on the basis of disability;
  • The positive and negative portrayal of people with disabilities in popular culture;
  • Barriers that prevent full communication and inclusion as well as the need for positive attitudes vital to clients with disabilities; and
  • Currently acceptable terms and language guidelines in describing disabilities.
Eligible for 6 hours CEU.
