Re: [emrat:2904] Fall Colors Ride?

I was almost resigned to staying home too. Have been working through a cold. Figured I would be your proxy in case anyone showed. The route was fun! Your tiger should be fine on it.

Mannie; I knew that if I didn't ride it would turn out to be a beautiful day!  Your route sounds like a great one for my KLX.  Maybe we can repeat it sometime.  Wayne E.

Well, since I am feeling better than previous days, I went ahead and ventured out.  Stopped at Wayne's original rendezvous point and had a cup of coffee until about 10 after 11. At that time, I started venturing south on on my own.

Got to Sedalia and decided that since I was on my own AND I was on the V-Strom, I made a quick decision to NOT turn south.  Continued on 67 up into the hills, by the Sprucewood and when I reached the end of the gravel road, turned left towards Deckers.  The mild temperatures, the sun gleaming off of the river, and my favorite band in my ear made this a very relaxing ride.  At Deckers, headed north, had lunch, then came back down 285.

What a great day for a ride!

EMRATs;  I am still too ill to ride, so I will not be leading the below ride today.  I hope this doesn't throw a wrench into anybody's plans.  Have fun whatever you do.  Wayne E.

EMRATS;  thanks for the response to my suggestion for a ride this Sunday (9/22).  I have been ill most of this week, and until today I seem to have been getting well.  I'm pretty punk today, however, so if I do not improve by tomorrow, I will not ride.  Here are my plans:

Meet at the gas station (I think it is a Valero/Diamond Shamrock) just South of C-470 on Santa Fe Drive, on the West side of the street, at 11:00 AM.  Ride down to Palmer Lake thru Sedalia and stop for coffee &/or lunch.  I plan on riding East from Palmer Lake after our stop, to eventually end up back in Aurora.

I plan on getting up early to watch the F1 car GP, and will post this site by 9 AM if I decide to cancel out.

Good idea, the roads and colors should be better by the 29th.

I wonder if we should delay a week and maybe the roads will be better and the colors will be peaking?

We went to Palisade / Colorado National Monument last weekend.

There were a couple of *very* tiny pocket patches on McClure Pass and on the Grand Mesa scenic byway, but really didn't see any elsewhere.

I'm on a quick trip to the Sand Dunes.  Left on Tuesday and will return on Thursday.  Surprisingly, all along 285 the fall colors are almost non-existent.  The aspens are really late this year.  It may be better on a northern route.  Will provide an update when I get home.  I suspect the aspens won't be colorful for another week or two, in case you want to factor this into your planning.

I agree, I think we may hit road closures in many places and debris on the roads. Anyone have a MC Butler map to choose another area? I have one, but I am not the best judge of the roads and I am still tentative for Sunday.

The weather is looking better for this weekend, but not sure about the roads. Surely Lyons and Estes Park will be a bit of a mess still by this weekend. I'm wondering if we should think about another route if we still want to do this on Sunday. I'm not as familiar with some of the mountain roads south of I-70...but that might be a better direction to head.

Anyone have any ideas?

After the great ride on Sunday, I thought I would throw out a suggestion for a ride to see some of the fall colors up in the mountains and also hit up Trail Ridge Road (hopefully) before it closes for the season.

Possible route

Meet in Golden, head up US-6 to US-40 to Winter Park (B), then on to Granby (C) past Grand Lake then up through Rocky Mountain National Park and over Trail Ridge Road ($10 entrance fee for motorcycles), Estes Park (D) (lunch/gas?), then down the Peak to Peak Highway CO-7, CO-72, CO-119, US-6 back to Golden.

Duration

GoogleMaps shows as 217mi, 5:20 driving time. Bit of a long one, but a good chance to hit up some beautiful country before the fall/winter is fully upon us. If we are kickstands up at 8:00am we can be still be home at a decent time in the afternoon. I've done this route (in the reverse direction) and it was just about 6 hours including stop for breakfast in Winter Park.

Dates

9news is forecasting peak fall colors in that area Sep 18-Sep 29. How about Saturday Sep 21 or Sunday Sep 22?

So what do you all think?
