RE: [emrat:4486] Bike Shopping!!

Steve,

My 05 had low miles, about 4k if I recall right.  Major mod for me was the seat.  Wanted the step taken out to give me more fore/aft flexibility and more leg room.  Went to Bitchin' Stichin' and they did an excellent job of building the foam up to a smooth single level seat and recovered.  All the difference in the world for guys our size.

Maintenance issues?  Had to replace the steering head bearings this year due to brinelling, and this on a bike I have never wheelied!  Also the fork seals and a few batteries.  Engine good, so far.  So for the mission of causal exploring on dirt roads and light trails, seems like a good trusty mount.  Put in a 500+ day earlier this year and I was not particularly beat.

I am running Anakees and they have been pretty smooth on the paved miles, good and grippy to the point of dragging pegs and reasonable but nothing special in the dirt.  I imagine a KTM 690 would be more fun on the gas, but I have no regrets.

Bullet Bob

Have you sat on one?  What I can tell you from Sara's and Katie's, is that I find them *very* short.  You are a lot taller than I am.

Mostly they are bullet proof though, with one exception, the water pumps and cooling fans tend to go on them.

The tail light assembly tends to shake itself loose, but that's more of an annoyance than a problem.

Headlights are week, tail light dim, but Sara added auxiliary lights and an LED tail light.

She actually really likes the Shinko 705's.

Possibly looking into possibly buying a 2003 BMW F650GS/ABS.This one in particular is bone stock, two owner bike with 15,700 miles. It is in "prestine" condition.

Questions  for those of you that own one.Any known mechanical issues for that year or safety recalls?Which brand of tires work best on a F650?Recommended modifications?

Bike is a little ways from being bought, but after checking NADA values, price could be a sticky issue.Be willing to pay $500 over NADA if the bike comes with a service history, but no more.Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
