Re: [emrat:4607] AMA Action Alert: Help End Federally Funded Motorcycle-only Checkpoints

We can't afford not to belong.

I would hope that we all look upon membership in the AMA as protecting motorcyclists from legal stupidity and helping us maintain the ability to ride. Sure the towing service and magazine are niceties, but the real focus of the AMA is riding. Not trying to criticize, but just pointing out why the AMA is important. My 2 cents.

I was a little surprised to learn that my Geico policy covers towing as well, which is why I let my AMA membership lapse.

With AMA membership up to something like $45 now IIRC, you can do better if you only want the insurance.  And to be honest, I barely have time to read the one or two other magazines I subscribe to so another magazine I won't read really isn't worth it (though I'll say this:  the American Motorcyclist magazine is at least better than the glorified product catalogues that masquerade as "motorcycle magazines" at the local newsstand.)

 It is a
great deal if you already plan to be a member.  I have the
 "champion" membership through the auto-renewal.
However, do keep in mind that it only covers up to 35
miles towing, while AAA and others  such as Better World
Club, Good Sam, Allstate and others cover up to 100 or
 more.
 I only have the
Champion as a secondary policy, because Auto-renewal is
easier, but I also have a primary policy.
The BMWOA covers 100 miles if you
add the Platinum Cycle Towing option at $26 a year to your
 membership as well.
 I
only bring this up, because I learned the hard way,  from
first hand experience, that the match can go pear shaped if
you need a tow of more than 35 miles :)

Yep. And if you join with automatic
renewal, "champion" membership, you get free
roadside assistance. I did the math, it was a better deal
than getting thru AAA or other insurance.
