RE: [emrat:4776] Uniform Summons and Complaint or Penalty Assessment;

I just returned from a 4,400 mile trip through the southwest.  Needless to say, there are long stretches of uninhabited highway in AZ, CA, NV and UT.  If the scenery is boring and there is little traffic, I tend to travel at 80 mph on remote, secondary roads. The exception is when I near any town, regardless of size, and then I lower my speed to no more than 5 mph above the speed limit when I approach 5 miles from the town.  From my experience, this is the boundary area where the local police tend to patrol.  Many times I have seen police handing our speeding tickets (I assume) within this boundary.  I noticed the same ticketing pattern on my trip to Alaska a few years ago.  The same applies to WY, ID, and MT.

I have made many auto trips across Kansas.  The problem with that state, versus the sparely populated areas of the western states, is that towns are closer together, so the police tend to patrol a larger proportion of the highways.  I generally hold my speed to within 5 to 7 mph of the speed limit in Kansas and similarly populated states.  Here is where cruise control works well to avoid keep a precise, ticket-avoidance speed limit.

Interestingly, the maximum speed limit in CA is 65 mph.  However, when I traveled on major freeways, traffic tended to move routinely between 70 and 75 mph, and sometimes 80 mph, even when police were in sight, so I just went with the flow of traffic in the fastest-moving lanes.  There was little vehicle movement between lanes, and I took advantage of the HOV lanes that allow motorcycles during rush hour.  The HOV lanes usually moved well, even when other lanes were bumper-to-bumper.

One other reminder.  I did some riding early morning and at dusk to photograph sunrise/sunsets locations.  This is the time when deer are very active, and I saw quite a few on and near the highway.  Be advised that slower speed are wise during these times of day.  I was traveling after sunset along Hiwy 1 and caught a deer in my headlight jumping across the road.  I was lucky that time.  Many areas in the west have free-range cattle, and they are frequently on and near rural roads.

Dave,

This is what happen.

I was traveling by myself on the Sprint back to Nebraska and Iowa to visit my family. I was clocked at 80 mph in a 65 mph zone . While I waited to receive my moving violation, I could see the Colorado Kansas state line. The law enforcement office was nice enough to only cite me for 74 mph in a 65 mph zone.

I have already paid the fine and according to Denise the Sprint is grounded.

This is getting out of hand... back to the original topic.

So, Bob and Denise (?) both got tickets? How did two people get clocked at the same time? I was under the impression that they would have to have two separate radar readings. One of you is not guilty. Which one was nailed, is the bigger question. I suppose you've already paid the fines?

To defend TK--and just for the record--he has never gone off a cliff on a BMW!

Granted, he has done a few other "things" on a BMW.

Bob, I may be wrong, but that's the first time anyone in our group has said anything positive about Kansas.

Sean,

I was clocked at 80. The best part of the hole encounter was that I could see the Colorado Kansas state line as I waited.

You didn't do too bad.  Sara and I were both tagged teamed last Memorial Day for traveling 78 in a 55.  While they were reduced to 75 so that they weren't more than 20 over and the points reduced even further for paying early, it was an expensive day
