[emrat:5642] Ed Kretz Jr

Some years ago, perhaps in 2003-2004, Tom Sangl and I went down to the Pueblo Motorsports Park for the AHRMA races.  We saw Ed Jr. ride the Indian around the track.  At that time, I did not know about the legendary Ed Kretz.

Later, as we were strolling about, we happened upon a motorhome with a class Triumph parked outside.  We fell into conversation with the gentleman and it turned out to be Ed Jr.  He gave me a poster of his father, which I still have and which is stored away.  I'll have to dig it out and bring it to a meeting.

If you have not yet seen the new DVD, "Why We Ride," then try to watch it, for many reasons, including the fact that Ed Jr. and his mother (Ed's wife) were interviewed for the documentary and Ed's life is discussed.  I think I'm correct in this statement . . . . right, Sean and Bob?

Bob; I know of both Ed Kretz and Ed Jr.  They were both featured prominently in Floyd Clymers' book on motorcycling published in the late '60's.  I didn't realize that Ed Jr. lived in Colorado, though.  I was behind you at the meeting tonight and you're probably at least as deaf as I am, so I figure you didn't hear my acknowledgement.

Yeah, I recall getting the news about Ed., Jr.  while at TNT.  It really put a sense of sorrow over the weekend.  But TNT weekend, also serves to remind me of Ed, Jr.  and what a warm and generous man he was.  Very giving of his time and very devoted to caring for his lovely wife, well into the severe stages of Alzheimer's.

Anyone who is a fan of motorcycling should at the very least get themselves a basic history of Ed, Jr and his Dad, Ed "Iron Man" Kretz.  Both AMA Hall of Famers and Iron Man was arguably the greatest racer of his time.

He had an awesome collection of memorabilia and news clippings

at his home "museum."  Fantastic collection of bikes. I always enjoyed the visits and the history he would share.

Visiting Ed, Jr. earlier that summer and then seeing his Indian and photos at the Indian booth at Sturgis, are the last memories I have of him.

R.I.P Ed, he  was an awesome individual and it was a true honor to get to know him!

Let me know Sean and I can get my check to Roy as well. I posted on the FB page telling them I wanted a T-shirt but I won't be in town to join in on the ride.

I brought this to the attention of the EM/RATS at the meeting tonight but I was somewhat surprised no one knew who Eddie Jr was or his Dad for that matter the Iron Man...winner of the first Daytona 200. Hopefully they will read about Eddie on his FB page and get inspired to attend the Memorial Ride for Eddie Jr. He was a wonderful individual and I enjoyed my many visits with him. To have one of the original world class motorcycle racers here in Sedalia was certainly a treat for me.

I wish I could do both.  I may have to see if I can get Roy or someone to bring my $25 to O'Brien's to support the cause.

Here is the information regarding the Memorial Ride for Eddie Kretz Jr. Hopefully some of our EM/RATS that are not going to Taos this weekend will attend.

We are changing things up for the monthly member meeting. We are going on a ride... so don't go to South Side Johnny's this time around.

Colorado Springs riders can meet at Woodmen Rd Park n Ride 7:30, Leave parking lot at 7:45am for O'Brien's Cafe in Sedalia by 8:30

Riders from points north can go direct and meet up with us at O'Briens after 8:30 am

Cost is $25 (cash only please)  which includes a tee shirt, breakfast and BBQ lunch later at Fay Myers.  Proceeds go to the Alzheimer's Association.

If you intend to come to this, please respond to the Ed Kretz, jr memorial Ride facebook page so they can get a headcount for planning purposes at www.facebook.com/kretzmemorialride

Hope to see you all there

Whiskyman

Pay and enjoy the Kertz Memorial ride.
