Dates are October 10th and 11thClub fall colors rides have been historically hit or miss, so this year we are going to planning an overnight ride, that will all but guarantee some fall colors, cover some great roads, and provide some unique and interesting photo opportunities along the way. We pre-rode this last year and the trip was fantastic.
We will depart from the Blue Cow in Morrison at 8:00AM. From there we will head up 285 to Pine Junction, before winding our way down 24 through Divide to CR-1 and toward the tiny town of Guffey. In Guffey we will take a quick opportunity to photograph our bikes alongside "The Last Ride," along with some of the other unique sites in town.
From Guffey we will travel down Hwy. 9 to Canon City, where we will stop for lunch. After lunch we will continue toward 165 and through the San Isabel National Forest, with
a stop at Bishop's Castle for a short tour of the Castle and another photo opportunity.
After our castle exploration, we will continue on 165 to Colorado City, before jumping on I‐25 for a quick jaunt to Trinidad, where we will stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Dinner that evening will be at Tequila's, a nice family owned Mexican restaurant within walking distance of the hotel that good food and drink!
The next day's return trip will begin with a trip along Highway 12, the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway. The lore of this area is vivid, swirling in the spiritual myths of the American Indians and the history of their clashes with Spanish explorers. The highway rises to Cuchara Pass on the shoulder of the Spanish Peaks. The Tarahumara Indians held these summits as sacred and believed that all life on earth originated from this area. This was by far the highlight of last year's pre‐ride. The fall Aspen colors where bright, vivid and dense on Cuchara Pass, giving the overall effect of riding through a twisty tunnel of gold.
One of the highlights along the Highway of Legends is the village of Stonewall. Stonewall is located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It grew around a large gap in the Dakota Wall, a formation of Dakota sandstone that stretches along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.
