Well you've certainly opened up Pandora's box with this one. Everyone has their own preferences and needs, which is what makes this such a personal decision. Good luck!
-- One other thing to consider Ross, is chain vs shaft drive. While chains aren't much of an issue anymore, they still require maintenance on the road. Shaft drives don't but they add weight to the bike. Personally, I prefer shaft drive and all 3 of my regular rides have them.

You have the height and strength for a larger bike and probably would appreciate the extra leg room and wind protection. Sport tourers are a bit heavier but provide much more long distance comfort which you may want on a long ride like the 3 Flags Classic. Adventure bikes, such as the Tiger 800 are great for longer rides, but there are always trade offs.I personally use a Yamaha FJR for my long trips because it has a lot of storage, is supremely comfortable, and there are Yamaha dealers everywhere. I rode one on the 3 Flags in 2013 and am planning to do the same thing this year. My first one has got about 70k on it with zero problems in that time.Other bikes to consider are Honda ST 1100 or 1300, Kawasaki Concourse, Triumph Trophy or Sprint, and BMW RTs of you want to go European.If you like the lighter weight of an adventure style bike, the Suzuki V-Stroms are popular, as are Triumph Tigers (as Bob alludes to), BMW GS models, and Kawasaki Versys models.Most of all, you need to get the bike that fits you best.If you have a great bike that you don't feel comfortable on, you won't like it very long.Sit on everything you like and test the ones you love.
