I've used an old first generation SPOT for several years on long rides and wilderness backpacking trips. It's basic and simple to use and very dependable. The annual fee (I think around $150ish) stings a little for something that mostly sits in a drawer all year but not too bad. I personally don't need a two way communication feature and I don't want it when I'm backpacking. Defeats the point. Depends what features you need, I guess, but if it's basic messaging/tracking with an emergency/SOS function then the SPOT is hard to beat IMHO.
I have the Spot Gen3 and it works ok. The subscription always seems a bit much, bu the tracking is decent and the SOS button is nice to know it's there. If I had to go get a new one I would probably go with the Garmin inReach for the two way messaging. On Tue, May 21, 2019 at 12:20 PM Martin Richard <martinarmy1961@gmail.com> wrote:--Curious about who uses a satellite tracker, what you use, how much it costs and how well it works?I'm contemplating some Iron Butt rides this Summer and for some of them a tracker is required for "certification" (I'm thinking particularly the "Heaven-to-Hell" where you ride from the top of Mount Evans to Badwater Basin in Death Valley, the highest- and lowest-paved roads in North America, respectively.)Maybe a good topic for a presentation? If there's someone who's willing to do it, that is.Martin
