Re: [emrat:11386] Satellite trackers?

As to the point of the two way messaging.  It really isn't to share your back country experience with friends and family via text, though you certainly could. More to the point it is to be more specific about the nature of the emergency with emergency services, friends and family on your contact list, etc.

With Spot if, for example, you come upon another hiker or rider who needs emergency help or fell and broke your throttle wrist and can't ride out and need a tow, or broke your ankle and can't hike out. You can just hit SOS, but without the ability to converse, by two way, they will send the Calvary.  I have seen it first hand when I triggered my Spot for another rider in Rist Canyon, so many emergency services vehicles showed up they had to turn half of them away.  It also sent an emergency message to my family in my emergency contacts and they couldn't reach me because there was no cell service.

With the ability to two-way you can let EMS and family know you are not directly involved, or your injury is  minor and not to worry.   Your wife/husband  never wants to get an emergency message when your out hiking or riding and not be able to reach you, not knowing if you are seriously injured, dead, whatever. :)

Additionally they also have the Freedom Plans.  More per month, but you can suspend it for the months you don't need it so it could cost less per year.

From what I can see online, the Garmin InReach offers a monthly subscription option vs. an annual so that is a point in its favor.

I have the Spot Gen3 and it works ok. The subscription always seems a bit much, bu the tracking is decent and the SOS button is nice to know it's there. If I had to go get a new one I would probably go with the Garmin inReach for the two way messaging.

Curious about who uses a satellite tracker, what you use, how much it costs and how well it works?

I'm contemplating some Iron Butt rides this Summer and for some of them a tracker is required for "certification" (I'm thinking particularly the "Heaven-to-Hell" where you ride from the top of Mount Evans to Badwater Basin in Death Valley, the highest- and lowest-paved roads in North America, respectively.)

Maybe a good topic for a presentation?  If there's someone who's willing to do it, that is.
