Re: [emrat:11424] Re: Brit-Bike Collection up for Auction

Well the Prince of Darkness earned the title with good reason but remember these old Brit cars and bikes were built to run at sea level at 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 90% humidity.  We are trying to run the hell out of them at 6000 to 9000 feet and 90 degrees Fahrenheit with 20% humidity.

The real problem with old Brit bikes and cars were the Lucas electric components. They smell rain and they quit working. Given the weather in England I think it was a conspiracy to get  everyone into the nearest pub!

More like their shins Steve.  Along with the mandatory 5(?) mile an hour impact resistant bumpers they also had to raise the height which they did by literally putting in a lift kit to bring them up a couple inches.  Most on the road now have had that kit removed but occasionally you still see one, easy to spot with the wheel well 6 inches above the top of the tire.  British cars are a lot like British bikes; just a little harder to push.

I had heard that he rubber bumpers were installed as a safety item, which explains why they weren't concerned about the aesthetics so much. Apparently the owners were complaining about banging their knees into the steel bumpers whilst pushing their cars during their regularly unscheduled breakdowns.

I've seen some owners paint those bumpers body-colored, which makes them look more modern, like a fourth-generation Alfa Spider.  Decent upgrade.   It's not authentic, sure, but if you have a rubber-bumper MG, who cares about authenticity?

Some neat bikes Dan.  Nice cars too except for maybe the rubber bumper MGB.
