Historically the Irish used to wear a garment that was often mistaken for a kilt, known as a lein-croich.  This garment was a long tunic,  traditionally of a solid colour cloth, with black, saffron and green being the most widely used colors.  These were adopted for use by Irish nationalists and later on by Irish regiments serving in the British Army.  The more traditional kilt was later adopted as a symbol of Celtic identity and many County tartans as well as the Irish National tartan were registered.

OK, Doc, here’s a question about kilts that has long been in the back of my mind.

Did the Irish ever wear kilts?

Wayne?  John McDonough?

I’ve always thought that kilts were strictly a Scottish thing.

Just a heads up for those that did not know this, and those that own Kilts or any Tartan plaid. National Tartan Day is the 6th of April every year and our meeting is the day after. Just an FYI if anyone wants to don the Kilt in honor for the TRAT meeting on the 7th.
