Historically the Irish used to wear a garment that was often mistaken for a kilt, known as a lein-croich. This garment was a long tunic, traditionally of a solid colour cloth, with black, saffron and green being the most widely used colors. These were adopted for use by Irish nationalists and later on by Irish regiments serving in the British Army. The more traditional kilt was later adopted as a symbol of Celtic identity and many County tartans as well as the Irish National tartan were registered.
