Red Cross, Denver Fire to Install Smoke Alarms, Teach People Fire Safety in Englewood

Outreach Day on Oct. 10 aims to reduce deaths and injuries due to home fires

Englewood CO, As part of America's PrepareAthon!, the American Red Cross and Denver Fire Department are teaming up with city and civic groups in Englewood to visit homes in Englewood on Oct. 10 to install lifesaving smoke alarms and teach people how to be prepared for home fires.

The one-day outreach event aims to reduce deaths and injuries as part of a broader Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. The effort is also strengthening connections among a variety of groups – the types of connections that prove vital when disasters and emergencies strike. In addition to the Red Cross and Denver Fire, partners in the Home Fire Campaign include the Englewood Citizens Academy Alumni, the Knights of Columbus, Englewood CERT, and more.

Volunteers from the various partner agencies will canvass Englewood neighborhoods on October 10 to install smoke alarms in homes that need them and to teach people about what to do now in case a fire breaks out in their home.

Other Englewood non-profits, civic groups and individual community members are encouraged to join the coalition. Volunteers will be assembling at 8 a.m. to get organized prior to heading out into the neighborhoods, and will canvass until about noon. To sign up, fill out this short Volunteer form.

The Great ShakeOut

Everyone should know how to protect ourselves in an earthquake. Even if earthquakes are rare where you live, they may happen where you or your family travel. Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness.

ShakeOut Drills are scheduled for 10:15 a.m. local time on October 15. However, organizations may hold a ShakeOut drill on another date within two weeks of this date. Anyone can participate, from a single individual at his or her home to a major company at the office. Talk to your coworkers, neighbors and friends about the ShakeOut and encourage their participation. Sign up for free at www.shakeout.org/register to be counted in the ShakeOut Drill, get email updates, and more.

Fire Prevention Week 2015

Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10, 2015. This year's theme is: "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm!" This message encourages everyone to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep.

This year, USFA is dedicating the month of October to providing fire safety tips. USFA is using hashtag #firesafein31 throughout the 31 days of October to share daily tips to help make homes and families safer. Follow #firesafein31 on Twitter at @usfire and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/usfire, and download the Fire Prevention Week infographic to share important fire safety tips with family and friends.

Fire safety is something everyone can practice. More information about Fire Prevention Week is available at www.nfpa.org/safety-information/fire-prevention-week.

Hundreds of Volunteers Still Needed for Project Homeless Connect 15!

It may be cliché to say that you can make a difference in someone's life in just a day, but it's true.  By volunteering for just a few hours at this year's Project Homeless Connect 15, you can help thousands of homeless individuals, families, seniors and veterans accomplish in one day what could take them more than eight months to do individually. Various volunteer opportunities are available the day of the event and the day before.

Project Homeless Connect 15 links people experiencing homelessness or who are at-risk of homelessness with resources like resume assistance, hygiene items, identification records, homeless court, health care needs, pet care, benefits enrollment and more in one day at one location.

Project Homeless Connect 15 will take place:

Tuesday, November 17, 2015, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Colorado Convention Center, Downtown Denver
