Hi, everyone. I've offered to lead the ride down to Taos on Friday, and I'd like to get a tentative headcount as to who might ride along.
Rather than taking the straight-down-US-285 route I'd like to take a less direct but more fun set of roads. Tentatively my plan would take us to Pine Junction, then down CO 126 to Deckers/Woodland Park, then US 24 and Twin Rocks Road, down through High Park and ending up at CO-9 and US 50 near Royal Gorge, From there, West to Texas Creek, then South on CO 69 through Westcliffe and Rye, and into Walsenburg, where we'd pick up US 160 West over La Veta Pass and into Fort Garland, and from there South on CO-159 through San Luis, and NM 522 into Taos.
Google Maps gives me a distance of 350 miles and a riding time of 6:41. The halfway point would be in Westcliffe so if anyone knows of any good restaurants there I'd like to hear them (I haven't been through Westcliffe in at least a decade or more.)
If that route sounds too ambitious to some, I'm open to suggestions but I would point out that the most direct route - US 285 from Denver all the way to Tres Piedras and then US 64 to Taos - is only 50 miles and 1 1/2 hours shorter (292 miles/ 5:15.)
Anyway, let me know if you plan on riding so I can make sure we don't leave anyone behind.
Since not everybody is on the Google Group I'll post this on FB as well.
Martin
