I had a Sprint 1050 (almost a twin of Capt. Bob's) and an early Tiger 800XC. While both had some initial teething issues with EFI, both were resolved over time with ECU map updates. Not a fatal flaw with either.
I actually wish I had gone with the Tiger 1050 over the Sprint, but mostly because I just couldn't get along with the riding postion / bars with the Sprint. I tried everything from risers, to different bars, and adjusting all kinds of angles, but the end result was after any long ride, my neck and back would be killing me, I had knots under both shoulders and the outer 2-3 fingers on each hand would be numb. I had to get rid of it, as much as I loved it, and traded it in for the Tiger 800XC. I think if I had bought the Tiger 1050 instead, it would have been a happier relationship 😊
The only knock I had, other than ergonomics with the 1050 engine, is that it puts out an insane amount of heat from the engine, particularly the right side. I always felt as though it were melting my right boot. That and you definitely *don't* need a heated seat. It gets plenty hot, sometimes too hot, from the under seat exhaust.
Other than that, I still miss my old Sprint 1050, even if I couldn't ride it far. I think the Tiger 1050 you will enjoy 😊

Thanks for the input on the Tigers. Even though they're odd looking I kind of like the 955i but it seems like they're not nearly as common as they used to be. From what I've heard the 1050 is an amazing machine. Either way, I may decide to go ahead and put the BMW up for sale after the 2017 riding season is over, whenever that is.
One question, I have heard that the 800 Tigers had some "teething issues" with regard to the EFI. Were there any such issues with either the 955i or the 1050? And what about ABS on the 1050 - yay or nay? My BMW does have ABS and while I've never had to use it (knock wood!) the folks in the BMW world say that the servo assisted (i.e. power brakes), are very nice but also that if they fail it's a crazy expensive (as in, >$2500) costly fix (imagine getting a $2500 repair bill on a bike you paid $3700 for,)
