I started riding as a kid in dirt and on grass and the experience was so valuable when I later began riding on the pavement. It should be universal to start on dirt so that slips and slides are not a freak out moment when they happen on the pavement. I likely put 100's of dirt and gravel riding miles on the Trophy and RT, on roads that were never meant for big road bikes, and at speeds that would impress even Wild Bill Windsor.
