Dan, I'll bring up the topic tonight and also post it on Facebook.
There are three significant battlegrounds in Eastern CO. Sand Creek, of course, is the site of the infamous 1864 massacre at the hands of the Colorado Volunteers, Beecher Island is another one and the third is Summit Springs near Sterling in which William "Buffalo Bill" Cody was one of the participants. My dad actually took some of his ROTC students from CSU out to Summit Springs so I may be able to get some notes from him.
Note that both Beecher Island and Sand Creek would involve some riding in dirt. It would be well graded dirt and not for more than a few miles, but that is a planning consideration.

Well, I've always had in the back of my mind a ride out onto the Eastern Plains in the spring or fall to visit some of the battlefields in Colorado from the US Calvary-Indian wars.
One is the 1869 Beecher Island Battlefield, south of Wray, which I visited some years ago.
But I would not want to get caught out on the High Plains on a bike in bad weather!
