Brandon,
When I owned your Sprint, there was a period of time when the same thing happened occasionally. Speedo would read 0 and the odometer would not change. I found nothing in the cable connections or the sending unit of a physical nature that would cause the issue. I even removed the front wheel, examined the sending unit, made sure things were clean, lubed and installed correctly. Sometimes everything worked fine, sometimes not. It was an issue only at the beginning of a ride, rarely at any other time. Don't worry, I didn't rack up miles of riding that throw off the true mileage of the bike.
My solution was to stop (usually just in front of my house) and turn off the key, turn it back on and restart. This worked often. Other times, I would do the same thing, but also include wiggling the front end back and forth hard several times with the handlebars. That would typically set things right. Only once or twice did I ride away without success. If it did fail to work right, then I stopped after a few blocks, and went through that routine. Once it was working, it continued to work fine for the remainder of the ride, including stops, shut-downs and re-starts. There was nothing intermitent about it, convincing me that a purely mechanical or wiring issue did not exist. But I was stumped.
It gets better, bear with me. Sometime in the last 6 months or year that I had the bike, I noticed slow starting due to a weak battery, which did not improve even after regular battery-tender hook ups. About that time I noticed the speedo/odo issue was really being tough to resolve. When the battery just did not show that it was going to last much longer, I replaced it with a new one. The bike then started up with authority, and guess what...
I never, ever, I repeat, never, had the speedo/odo issue show itself, ever again. After installing a fresh, new battery. No wiggling wires, going through the old routine, none of that. Everytjhing just worked exactly like it should from that moment forward. Miracles never cease.

What does that cost?

Brandon,Denise 2004 Sprint RS had the same issue. We fought this issue for years and the final resolution was a firmware update to the ECU.CPT Bob WDielectric grease is always good idea too like Manuel said. :-)Sent from my Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch
