Re: [emrat:3810] Appealing to the collective wisdom: Heated gear

Martin,

I can attest to Pete at Bavarian Motor Works is a very good tech guy and can give you the stamp for your service book.  He is definitely not charming by any stretch but I found him incredibly knowledgeable about pre-2009 BMWs.  If you want a good, less expensive mechanic go see him.  If you want a good, less expensive mechanic to pal around with...find another guy!

Pete Homan at Bavarian Motorcycles West, or "Mr. personality" as I like to call him (you'll get the joke when you meet him), is a great tech. The only thing I miss from the dealership is a detailed printout of the work done. In other words, when I take the Beemer to Foothills for a major service, I get a two-page printout telling me every little thing that has been done. Pete gives you a receipt that says "24,000 mile service." I have a strong preference for the detailed printout, but Pete is also reliably about a third less expensive, and he does great work.

Performance Cycle is also pretty much within walking distance of Pete's place. I used to take my (now Dan's) Sprint RS there for tire changes. I'd drop off the bike, walk to Performance, walk back with a set of tires, and my total cost for buying, mounting, and balancing the tires was around $300. Greatest service scam in Denver, IMHO.

Curtis:  That's a good point.  With 53k on it, it should have had some of the routine stuff done already.  According to the seller it was maintained by an independent BMW shop in Fort Collins (Beemers and More, I think?)  Maybe I should give them a call and see if they can tell me what was done with the bike.

I also should probably have it "checked over" by a dealer.  Since I've never had that done before, what's a reasonable price to have this done?  And while Foothills is close to work and familiar to me, are there any other places I should consider?  What about Bavarian Motorcycles West on South Delaware?  Any dealings with them?

Thanks!

Martin, are you sure it wasn't already handled by the dealer during routine maintenance? The 955 Triumphs had the same issue, and I think the dealers just swapped 'em out when they came in. Foothills made a handful of fixes to my GS under warranty that I never knew about until I had them print out the service history a couple years ago.

F bikes don't have the tank issue so I'm no help there.

Norman and Curtis:  Thanks for the input.  It's funny I just now looked up the adapters in a catalog and it mentions the CANBUS issues and says I should connect directly to the battery.  Guess that means I'm pulling the tank off this weekend!

Now, apparently some BMWs have issues with 'quick disconnects' to the fuel lines breaking.  Is there a better product I can replace them with?

I believe the answer is yes too but Curtis is correct, to avoid Canbus
issues I would look for a direct battery connection device. That's what
I did on my BMW per advice I got from an MOA forum. Plus that keeps
your powerlet free for phones or other devices.

questions?
I was going to post this on a message board but I figured there's almost ce=
rtainly enough collective wisdom in our club to answer my question.=C2=A0=
=20
=C2=A0
Back in "the day", there were only one or two companies making heated gear,=
Gerbing and Aerostich (I think)=C2=A0 I got my Gerbing heated liner a few =
years ago.=C2=A0=20
=C2=A0
Now there are a bunch of companies making the stuff.=C2=A0 My question is:=
=C2=A0 Do they all pretty much use the same connectors and adapters?=C2=A0 =
Reason I ask is that I need a cable to connect my Euro power adapter (I gue=
ss also called a "Powerlet?") to my heated liner, and I can see some on Bik=
eBandit that seem like they will work but they are not a Gerbing product.=
=C2=A0 I'm reluctant to order unless I know it will work (I have a $10 gift=
card from Bike Bandit which is why that is my first choice.)=C2=A0 Looks l=
ike the brands sold at Bike Bandit are Symtec, Gears, Alpinestars and Tourm=
aster.=C2=A0=20
=C2=A0
Thanks in advance for any advice.
=C2=A0
(Also, if anybody out there has an extra adapter or controller they want to=
sell, shoot me an email, maybe we can work a deal?)
