Meh.
Given the completely unwarranted hit pieces they did on SUVs in the 80's and 90's, CR's reviews don't mean much to me.
And merely listing an average number of failures doesn't tell you much, and it doesn't say which models of which bike were affected - I would think that the GS is probably one of the less trouble prone of the modern adventure bikes, given the huge number of them that I see on the road (if I was to guess I'd say the GS models are BMWs biggest seller in the US.)
Touring bikes with all their farkles, geegaws, electric windshields, heated seats and AM/FM stereo? Yes, I can definitely believe they'd have a high failure rate just because there is more to break on them (which is one reason I wouldn't want a bike like that.)
