RE: [emrat:4022] BMW guys, I'm sorry

When you look at actual motorcycle publications and websites where they evaluate, Triumph comes out as one of the most reliable, trouble free bikes out there.

I do have to say that this report seems to have some holes in it.  Consumer Reports uses a formula of reported problems per a set number of units.  Two things make me suspicious of their conclusions:

1. The most problematic category is the Touring category.  These are the type of bikes that tend to put many many more miles than the other categories.  So, is it fair to compare a 4 year period of a bike that will have 50k miles to other bikes that may get 10k miles?  To BMWs credit, try to find a low-mileage used GS.

2. These are reported problems.  It would seem to me that a buyer who spends 25k+ on a GS Adventure or HD Ultra Classic with every option known to man, is more likely to have smaller issues addressed by the dealer.  "I paid $$$$$ for this bike, I expect it to be perfect", while others may live with or take care of smaller issues on their own.

My intent is to help slow the migration of our group to BMW :)

I am noticing a few other brands missing from the report; Ducati, Aprilia MV Augusta...I guess you don't lump Lamborghini in with Dodge, Toyota, and Volkswagen :)

I agree.  If or when I trade my Triumph, it will in all likelihood be for a KTM 1190.  I have a series bike crush for the KTM.  Who knows where KTM fits in that consumer reports list either, and frankly who cares.  Consumer Reports is hardly the be all and end all source for information.  I have become increasingly disappointed with them over the years, and cancelled my subscription several years ago.

I would probably go with KTM as well

I love the reactions! If money were no object, there would be a couple of B MWs I would have, a couple of Harleys I would have. Would I trade my current Triumph for any of them? No chance.
I have a KTM now and would happily add one outside of the limitless funds scenario.

Here's the difference that matters to me. Triumphs are reliable they're sturdy. Perhaps a bit heavy. But they are unique and not your common run of the mill bike that you see every day. They are unique and special.
If you think Triumph will do better, ask yourself whether there's any chance it could beat Honda or Kawasaki. It will be interesting to see where Triumph ranks if it ever gets big enough to make it onto the radar screen.

I was actually referring to where BMW stands in comparison.

They just seem unreliable because so many mishaps occur during the chroming process.
