I went the cheaper ammo can route because I needed to outfit two tigers at the same time. They weigh more than the aluminum boxes but still offer good waterproof storage and I saved about $1600 between the two bikes. Used the SW Motech mounting system.

I sort of went that "adapting Pelican cases" route, after the incident with those clips breaking on my 800 XC, except I didn't do the adapting. I purchased a set from Caribou Luggage in Boulder.I sold them to a guy named Phil in Montrose for his 800 XC and they are still going strong last I knew.Didn't do the Zegra Pro thing until I got the Explorer.Sara has the Jesse. Pros to them is that they may be the thickest and heaviest duty of the aluminum boxes, with maybe only metal mule being as thick. They will take a beating. They also contour them to fit around the exhaust, rather than 2 square boxes, so they are among the closest fitting options.Cons: Heavy duty and thick means they are among the heaviest options. Also the way the lids open can be restrictive if you have a duffle bag strapped across the pillion seat, because the swing in towed the bike.

If you are just going for the best luggage you can find, there are several options (Jesse luggage comes to mind, but you will pay for them).I have some Givi e21s on my V-Strom and they are fine for me. A little small though. I think if I had looked into it a little more, I would have gone the route of adapting Pelican cases to luggage (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/quick-release-mounting-kit-for-3-cases-topcase-sidecase-setup). This is more expensive than the Givi setup I got, but not nearly what you would pay for the shiny aluminum cases.An even more interesting alternative is to adapt some large ammo boxes. Darren has these on his Tiger, and I'm sure this is also a more budget friendly alternative to the various adventure luggage out there.
