As far as 2-up, I have ridden 2 up on a Thruxton, a V-Strom, a Harley Street Glide, and a GR650. The closest position to the Bonneville would probably be the GR650. I think that was pretty comfortable for both of us, although we didn't go any distance. The most comfortable for both of us was the street glide, which is probably closest to the TBird. The V-strom was second to the Harley, and would probably be even closer given the right seat. Thruxton was obviously the most uncomfortable for both of us 2-up.
I came very close to buying a Thunderbird Storm for a couple of reasons. I wanted something more suited to longer rides and since Erica wasn't riding her GR650 much, I thought maybe she might want to go on rides if I had something better for 2-up. Well, I had financing in place, Erica was with me to drive the truck home and I went to take another test ride. I decided it just wasn't for me. A few weeks later, I found a used V-Strom 1000. Erica was fairly comfortable on it, but she found she really liked riding it herself. So, first part of this year she got a 650 V-strom and has been a happy rider ever since.
So, yes, I think you will like the TBird. I think you will miss the Bonneville.

I went from a '76 Bonnie to a Rocket III and then to a '12 Bonnie. The Bonnie is much easier to handle and the upright riding position is what makes the Bonnie great (not to mention the retro cool factor). There are plenty of mods to make the Bonnie faster and more comfortable at higher speeds. Stick with what works for you!

I wish that I could have both. I was thinking of when my wife rides, the comfort of the tbird. I like the tbird look, sound, and low end torque. I just don't want to regret not having my bonneville se. I do like the 6 speed on the tbird for highway riding. My bonneville runs around 5000 rpm when going 85 mph. I guess that is fine since the redline is 8000 rpm. What is a 2012 bonneville se worth? Thanks for your input with this.

Thunderbird handles well but is a completely different bike. The bonneville is much more nimble and has better clearance in the twisties. The thunderbird is the best handling cruiser I have ridden. As for tge power, it has been debated on trat whether the tbird is any faster than the bonneville. The tbird has a significant amount of weight when compared the bonneville. The obvious decision would be to keep the bonneville and buy the tbird. |
