South Terminal
A picture says a thousand words, but the lead designer on the South Terminal Redevelopment Program, Gensler, also recognizes that the casual observer may not always be aware of some of the thought behind the design. Both the exterior and the interior design of the new Westin hotel and conference center and the Public Transit Center are inspired by the expression of movement in the natural environment of Colorado and at Denver International Airport.
The PTC, the airport station for the new East Rail Line, is rooted in the land. Its design is the heavier, pre-cast base for the lighter, airier glass structure of the hotel and conference center.
Moving up from the PTC, passengers will experience an open air plaza. Taking advantage of Colorado's 300 days of sunshine each year, the plaza will be the bright focal point for new community events and programming.
Once in the hotel, the ambiance shifts from energy and flight, to a place of calm. During their stay, guests can breathe deeply and banish their stress as they enjoy the Heavenly beds in the Westin rooms and take in the extraordinary views from the lobby, conference center, and pool.
With such varied uses in store for the new South Terminal Redevelopment Program space, the Gensler team is working with other design professionals to ensure the user's experience is considered at every step of the planning process. To ensure the building is symbiotic with the tents of Jeppesen Terminal, Gensler's architects carefully considered the form and shape of this integrated structure. To address how wind, snow, and ice might impact the building or a traveler's experience on the plaza, Gensler consulted engineers who are experts in analyzing wind, snow, or ice impacts. Emergency, life, and safety engineers are also doing an extensive analysis of the design, as well as sound engineers to ensure the hotel rooms are quiet.
Overall, Gensler continues to focus on extending the sense of serenity already found in the iconic Jeppesen Terminal to the new elements of the South Terminal Redevelopment Program.
Thanksgiving Travel Tips at DIA
With nearly 52 million people traveling through Denver International Airport last year, the airport is expecting high passenger volume during Thanksgiving week—as many as 1 million travelers for the week. DIA encourages air travelers to take advantage of time-saving travel tips to "Go Like a Pro."
Pack Like a Pro to Clear Security Easily
- Travelers may bring one carry-on bag and one personal item (purse, laptop, etc.) through security. Put medications and other required items in your carry-on bag.
- The Transportation Security Administration's restrictions on taking liquids and gels through security remain in place. For more information on security screening and smart packing tips, visit www.TSA.gov.
- Leave holiday gifts unwrapped; TSA may open wrapped packages to check the contents.
- Traveling with children? Check out www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/traveling-children.
- If you are 75-years-old or older, you may leave on shoes and light jackets through security checkpoints. www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/screening-passengers-75-and-older.
Prepare Like a Pro:
- A good rule of thumb is to be inside the airport two hours prior to your flight departure time. This should allow for plenty of time to navigate flight check-in, security lines, and travel to your gate.
- Before you leave the house, check with your airline to confirm that your flight is on time, and check-in online if possible.
Use the Latest Travel Technology like a Pro:
- Get flight status information, road conditions, parking lot availability, security wait times, airport maps, ground transportation and more at www.flydenver.com.
- DIA recommends passengers download the free FlySmart travel app for the Blackberry, iPhone, or Android. FlySmart Airport is the only travel app that features content downloaded directly from www.flydenver.com, with the best information about DIA and your specific flight.
- Follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook.
- DIA offers free and premium Wi-Fi Internet access and phone charging stations throughout the airport.
Arrive Like a Pro:
Read the latest on construction around the airport, and watch the "Drive the Detour" video on http://flydenver.com/construction?URI=tcm:8-47030.
Park Like a Pro:
- For real-time parking information while you're on the road, watch for electronic signs along inbound Peña Boulevard or call (303) DIA-PARK.
- The $11/day East and West Economy Lots, located next to the Jeppesen Terminal garages, usually fill up first during holiday periods. The $7/day Pikes Peak and Mt. Elbert shuttle lots are an alternative to economy and garage parking, but remember to allow an extra 30 minutes when using shuttle lots. The East and West Terminal Garages are rarely full during the holidays and are available for $2/hour or a $21/day maximum.
- The Mt. Elbert parking lot offers QuickPark, a service that allows parkers to avoid pulling a ticket by simply inserting the same credit card upon entering and leaving the lot.
Check In Like a Pro:
- If you didn't check in online before leaving home, save time with self-service check-in kiosks near airline counters.
- Even if you checked in online or at a kiosk, passengers checking bags still need to go to a ticket counter to hand off luggage to the airline.
Know your airline's checked bag policies and fees in advance and avoid surprises.
Picking Up Loved Ones Like a Pro:
- Check with your friend or family member's airline, or visit www.flydenver.com, to confirm that the flight is on time before leaving for the airport.
- Parking or stopping along any airport roadway is illegal and dangerous and violators are subject to ticketing.
Find Information Like a Pro:
- DIA's Hospitality Ambassadors - easy to spot in their iconic cowboy hats - and Customer Service staff are available throughout the terminal and concourses to provide directions and information.
- Passengers without Internet access can use these helpful airport telephone numbers:
- (303) DIA-PARK (342-7275)

Airport Commuter-Rail Station Coming to Peña Boulevard and East 61st Avenue
Denver city officials have selected a site at East 61st Avenue for a commuter-rail stop along Peña Boulevard between Interstate 70 and Denver International Airport.
At this stop, a mixed-use transit-oriented development (TOD) is planned. L.C. Fulenwider, a Denver-based developer, was chosen to begin negotiating an agreement with the City and County of Denver to build the station.
Called the Gateway Area Station, this rail stop will become an invaluable part of the East Corridor rail line, which is funded and being constructed right now by our partners at RTD and Denver Transit Partners.
Located north of Green Valley Ranch Parkway and 56th Avenue and just west of Tower Road, this TOD is already at the crossroads of the area's population. The 637-acre site, with its uninterrupted majestic views of the Front Range, is being planned to provide a truly rich living area—catering to multifamily residences but also possibly encompassing a corporate campus or major manufacturing user.
"The mixed-use functions of Fulenwider's proposal — retail, shopping, restaurants, residential and dense multifamily — is appealing," said Denver International Airport's chief commercial officer, John Ackerman, as well as the site's high visibility and its location outside the noise contours of the airport runways."
Design work for the Gateway Area Station will begin shortly, aiming for an opening date that is concurrent with the railroad's activation sometime in early 2016.
Eventually there will be three TOD stations located in the airport's Gateway area. A second TOD is being planned at 40th Avenue and Peña Boulevard, where DIA, along with neighboring Aurora and an adjacent landowner, is envisioning a more commercially-focused concept. An inter-governmental agreement outlining areas of cooperation with the adjacent landowner has been structured and approved by Denver City Council.
DIA will continue to talk to and look for opportunities to collaborate with Adams County, Aurora, Brighton, and Commerce City, the airport's immediate neighbors, to maximize the value and capability of the Gateway development, while also meeting the region's sustainability objectives.

Carmen's Kitchen, which is located just outside the A Gates center core, offers exclusive products that include almond toffee, pecan toffee, nut-free toffee, rum cake, Jamaican meat rubs, and dips. Colorado Limited, which is located in the B Gates center core, offers branded apparel and gift accessories with Colorado themes and include fashion products for men, women, and children, plus accessories, such as hats, caps, jackets, and scarves. The kiosk also sells water bottles and souvenirs.
If opening your own concession or kiosk sparks your interest, please see the Business Opportunities section of www.flydenver.com for more information.

DIA's Art and Culture Program is funded by the City and County of Denver's "one-percent-for-art" requirement for public facilities and features nearly 30 site-specific works, including sculptures, murals, and other installations. The pieces are displayed in outdoor landscapes, inside Jeppesen Terminal and on airport concourses, as well as in the train tunnels and on the train itself. In addition to its permanent art collection, DIA curates temporary exhibitions, collaborating with museums, cultural institutions, and arts organizations to present the highest quality two- and three-dimensional work.
Financial Markets Very Positive about Denver International Airport Bonds
Denver successfully sold $856 million of airport revenue bonds at a historically low interest rate of 3.69 percent. The bond sale provides $394 million of funding for Denver International Airport's South Terminal Redevelopment Program and other capital improvement projects and $462 million of refunding bonds to reduce debt service costs for the airport.
"Denver International Airport is a key element in our plan to make a great city even greater," said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. "The outstanding response to this sale is a testament to DIA as one of the most efficient, financially sound, and beautiful airports in the world."
Nine investment banks, with Barclays serving as the lead firm, conducted the sale. Some of the maturities were significantly oversubscribed due to the strong demand for the bonds from a broad cross-section of buyers from Colorado, along with national retail investors, bond funds, insurance companies, money managers, and investment advisors.
"The entire city team is to be commended," said Denver Chief Financial Officer Cary Kennedy. "This is such an excellent result when you consider that over $7 billion of municipal bonds are being sold into the marketplace this week. With leadership from Mayor Hancock, Denver International Airport and Denver Finance Department staff did a fantastic job of providing vital information to potential investors, which contributed to the high demand for the bonds."
The bonds, rated A1, A+, and A+ by the three major credit rating services (Moody's, Standard & Poor's, and Fitch), were sold in three separate series and will be repaid from airport revenues.
"The South Terminal Redevelopment Program is important to Denver and the entire metropolitan region," said Kim Day, Denver aviation manager. "Building the DIA train station and hotel will provide many valuable construction jobs and ongoing service jobs when these airport facilities open."
Patrick Heck, DIA's chief financial officer, said, "This strong acceptance of DIA bonds demonstrates the market's view of DIA as a financially strong airport with a great competitive position."
