Coming next year, Combating the Culture of Poverty Myth, with dynamic presenter, Mike Green!

Presented in collaboration with Adams County Head Start, this workshop will explore prevalent, systemic misconceptions about those living in poverty--often called the 'culture of poverty'--and how such thinking can undermine your clients' best efforts to become self-sufficient.  

Unfortunately, many practitioners who are working with those living in poverty have little understanding of the concerns and feelings that are central to their clients' lives. Instead, they tend to operate from a middle class mindset and treat their clients as problems needing to be fixed rather than resources for themselves and their communities. What is needed is a shift in thinking. This three-hour training session can help.

Participants will:

• Learn about the unspoken attitudes and assumptions regarding poverty
• Discover how their own judgments and expectations affect relationships with clients
• Gain a better understanding of how their clients can leverage local resources which will positively affect their situations
• Learn to apply their knowledge of systemic assumptions, mental models, and resources to help in developing more constructive relationships with clients; and
Participate in small group break-outs where they can apply what they have learned through real-life scenarios and discussions with other attendees

Presenter Mike Green is affiliated with the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute. He offers training and consultation to organizations to engage local communities as partners for collective action. Mike is the co-author of When People Care Enough To Act: ABCD In Action, which is all about creating successful community partnerships. The Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) Institute is based at Northwestern University, and founded by Jody Kretzmann and John McKnight­, authors of Building Communities from the Inside Out. Mike is a licensed clinical social worker (M.S.W.) and family therapist. He has worked in human services, public welfare, mental health and schools. See examples of Mike's workshops here.
