RE: [emrat:4245] Bike won't start after washing

Thanks, Phil . . .

And, back to the issue of the kill switch: What would Triumph say?  From my 2007 1050 Tiger’s  owner’s manual:

“The engine stop switch is for emergency use.  If an emergency arises, which requires the engine to be stopped, move the engine stop switch to the ‘STOP’ position.”

Now, although I’ve toppled over four times on two of my Triumphs, I have no recollection of how I shut the engine down in each incident.

But there was one time when it was truly an emergency: I low-sided my 2001 Speed Triple over in western Colorado and was knocked unconscious.  Thus, my two riding companions—Doug Perkins and Dave “The Boz” Bosley—must have shut the engine off, if the engine was still running, when they rode back to the accident scene . . . but I doubt if they remember whether one of them hit the kill switch or just turned the key off.

This sounds like a potential problem with your side-stand switch.  You may want to check the plunger operation.  Feel free to swing by the shop if it’s still acting up and we can take a quick look in the parking lot for anything easy.

My Speedmaster used to do that occasionally too, only start in neutral. I think the washing was just a coincidence.

So the bike wouldn't start with the kickstand up and not in neutral. So, I put it in neutral and everything starts fine. Not sure what happened, or if I'll have problems down the road, but that's where I'm at.

ps - I have no idea where my kill switch is, or even if I have one. :)

I'll confess to accidentally hitting the kill switch at different times and then wondering why the bike will not start!

One precaution that I take prior to washing a bike is to put black electrical tape over the ignition keyhole, just to make sure that no water gets into the ignition switch.  I think I learned that trick from Peter Sharp . . .
