Re: [emrat:4320] Who uses a modular?

Thing to look for.

Comfort:

Yes go try them on first, but don't just look for the feel at the time, look for weight too. It can be comfortable as anything, but if the weight after long rides is there on your neck the interior comfort alone means squat. Most helmets have removable padding that is washable, but look to see if they also offer more than one type of interior padding included. Some offer the ability to leave some in and out depending on the weather. Look for if it has a skirt at the chin and back of the neck and if it is removable for summer. Venting, and how easy it is with heavy gloves to open and close. Is the eye opening on the shield wide enough for great peripheral vision. Does it keep out the noise for ear comfort. Does it have a built in sun visor. If not is it comfortable for glasses and does the modular get in the way of glasses when you open it.

Safety:

Are the hinges strong enough for impact and locking (the most important thing for a modular). Weight again, does it make you tired after a long ride. Sound again, if is safe for your ears and if not is it good for ear plugs.  Vision, is it obstructed, does it have a pin lock for fogging. When the modular opens, can it lock in place. When you ride with it up, does it have a low profile for wind resistance. That can be for comfort too on the neck after a while. Etc.

Anyway, my additional 2 cents.

Nolan was rated superior for modular design when it came to its fully stainless steel hinges and locking, that no one else offered prior to them. Everyone else had plastic that wore out and broke in many frontal impacts during tests. All the other manufactures have since taken Nolan's design and tweaked it for theirs. And they are priced well.

Hmmm...maybe those without kids and college tuition to pay could drop $650 on a helmet.  That would rule me out of a Neotec...

The Neotec has actually performed in it's duty as protection twice and kept the little wits I possess intact. While not the cheapest helmet around the quality of fit finish and protection are what I consider when I buy gear. The Neotec has no superiors in the modular helmet category in my opinion.
