RE: [emrat:4312] Who uses a modular?

I have an HJC modular I bought last year at Let It Ride on W Colfax. It has a sunshield that is great, very convenient to put on over glasses and their price was good. My speakers and microphone for my Sena fit great.

Jay:  I agree WRT trying on a helmet before buying.  That's why I'll never buy a mail order helmet again.  Performance Cycle has a great, knowledgeable staff and lets you wear their helmets for a little while to find the one you like.

Hi Martin,

I have a Shoei Neotec Modular helmet.  I purchased it last year from Moto Gear as part of their going-out-of-business sale.  I also have an older Shoei, but the newer one has some features that are really useful: 1) an internal sun shield, 2) Pinlock anti-fog shield, which works superbly, 3) a chin curtain, 4) several venting options, and 5) a removable liner.  The check pads are removable and can be replaced with different sizes for a perfect fit.  The Shoei helmets aren’t cheap, but they fit my head.  Other brands I tried at the time didn’t fit as well.  Having a good fit is probably the first consideration for a helmet regarding safety, regardless of the brand.  Also, a helmet needs to be quiet, since hearing protection is important too.

BTW, it’s a good idea to try on a helmet by first removing the cheek pads.  Sometimes the cheek pads make a helmet feel like it fits too tight.  Without the check pads in place it is easier to judge whether the body of the helmet fits properly.  You can then try out different size check pads to make everything fit perfectly.  When I first got into motorcycling make in the ‘80’s, I was probably wearing an over-sized helmet in order to make the check pads fit more comfortably.

I wear the Nolan 43E - itts a 3/4 helmet, very comfortable. And, they also have the Trillogy version of it that has the removable chin bar. Revzilla has it on sale for $215 (normerly $360)- http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nolan-n43e-trilogy-solid-helmet. Nolan makes great quality helmets; I've preferred mine over my last Scorpion  EXO that I had.

I order the latest Bell Rally Evo whobity whatzit before I got my most recent helmet (I believe it is also the EXO-400).  It was way to bobble-headed for me.  I sent it back in a hurry.

My current helmet (Scorpion EXO-400) is getting on to about 5 years old, and I'm thinking it's time to replace it.  Also thinking seriously of going to a modular for a lot of reasons.

So who here uses a modular and would you recommend it?  The one I've got my eye on is the Scorpion EXO 900.  This is actually a "convertible" where you can remove the chin bar entirely and wear it as a 3/4 helmet.  I tried one on at Performance and it seemed to fit my head very well (my head seems to like the Scorpions.)  Any pluses/minuses?  Anybody else use this helmet and if so what do you think of it?
